distributor module

Recommended Posts

I have a bad control module or pick-up coil in the distributor(Nippondenso) on my '85 MPFI GL-10 auto wagon. At least Haynes has lead me to believe this is the cause of the car running for only a couple minutes at a time.

I have tried visiting and calling around the various "used parts shops" but they keep telling me that I can only use the part from another '85 and they don't have one.

I also have an '87 GL 4WD auto wagon. The distributor looks exactly the same except for the leads. For the '85 the leads are ring type and on the '87 the leads are packaged in to a plastic plug.

I did some work on my previous Acura but I'm pretty foreign to Subarus and the sheer number of possibilities is killing me. I'm not afraid to modify a little bit but I do want it to work.

Or should I just replace the whole distributor and know it will be fixed for a while?

85-86(MPFI and Turbo) is a different setup than 87+ (MPFI and Turbo)

85-86 uses a vacuum advance, while 87+ does not.

I have had the module go out in an 87+ Turbo car, easiest thing was to simply replace the whole distributor.. takes about 10 minutes.

I don't have turbo in either car. And only one is MPFI.

Does your recommendation still hold?

Is it best to buy remanufactured or off a junker?

How much should I let a junk shop charge me if a new one is $215?

I'm not sure how often these things die.

Thanks for the help.

What is the other one out of? My recommendation holds true fro MPFI, SPFI and turbo

I have put in used ones with no problems

I wouldn't pay more that about $20 for one.

Doesn't seem like a regular occurence, but its often enough that I hear about it every once in a while.

Two suggestions: Get a wrecking yard distributor and replace it temporarily. Then send your old distributor to http://www.philbingroup.com/rebuilt/distributors.htm. They will rebuilt it for you (suggest they test the ignition module and/or replace it). Their prices are quite reasonable and you'll have a working unit you can trust as well as a backup used one.

Ooops, sorry; I thought yours was a new thread and just saw that you already appear fixed. Philbin is still a good outfit to deal with.
