Hamm3y
I trying to get my 1988 Subaru xt air conditioning working, but the belt is not fitting around the power steering pulley. If any one know where I could get a new one or find a used one, I would really appreciate it!

If any one know where I could get a new one or find a used one, I would really appreciate it! There's a few configurations, these can be tricky to figure out. What part number is the current belt? You can wrap something around the pullleys - like a rope or shoe string to measure and get an approximate length and then any auto parts store can get you that length, in however many ribs you need. All belts have easily determined lengths based on part numbers. Make sure you take that measurement, wrap the string around the pulleys, when the tension is adjusted very very loose so that you can tighten it. Getting that measurement is a little tricky though - just wrapping and measuring can be a little off due to stretch, grooves, where the tension is set, etc. So try to install it in the parking lot if possible so you can quickly try another. . moosens
Or try eBay and input your vehicle in the search and add belt or air conditioning etc
Hamm3y
The belt is not the issue, it fits perfectly fine, its the power steering pully. There is not enough room for two belt, and its rubbing against the power steering mount. Every time I put the belt on the PS pulley and crank it over it just falls off. Here is a picture of a good belt set up.
moosens
Ok then let’s see your pulleys and alignment please. Tough to tell from your post but my first thought is somehow the tension is loose. Again, I’m not there and can’t see from here. There are plenty of hoarders somewhat. Catching them in a good mood at the right time is another story. Good luck. moosens
You’re out west so you’ll score. If you were out east I’d say try F&S at their Roxbury CT location. They also have a shop in Waterbury where they are Subaru specialists and longtime dedicated to the brand. A couple of those guys have Brats and are somewhat vintage enthusiasts. Getting tougher on this coast. But these folks I’m talking about are probably the last ones around the northeast that they may have what you need for any Subaru from the early 70’s on. If you can’t score I’d give them a call.
Rupart
hi, i see in your pic that you have a p/s pulley that has only 1 belt position, you going to need the 2 belt version, close look at the two pics you posted seem to look like the single pulley is set back and the 2 belt one is set forward allowing the second belt room to fit. i will try to post another pic showing the idler pulley and bracket that is also on the rear(2nd) belt, if your setup does not have this you gonna need it. well my pic was too big and i am not allowed to post it. this idler is also an adjuster setup for the rear belt so check it out. it's all down under the compressor.
