For a long time, the 96 Impreza with the EJ22 that's still very nice was my daughter's car that I maintained very well, but now the rear clutch on the 4EAT has started not releasing again, and I don't have time in my life to once again delve into that. Also that car has lots of clear coat deterioration, so not looking to put a lot into the car. Now on to the 95 Impreza that also used to belong to me. Its engine is having major issues. Now belongs to a good friend's kid and I was thinking it might be worth putting the sweet EJ22 into that 95. But possibly the transition from OBD-1 to OBD-2 was at the 95 -> 96 boundary. Also, the engine computer in the manual trans car with EJ18 might not "speak" properly to the EJ22 from auto trans car. I realize the exhaust in the EJ18 car will be undersized for the EJ22, but maybe not a huge deal. The person who my friend would have do the engine swap is pretty capable, but I don't think is a Subaru wizard. So is this engine swap a stupid/nightmare idea? lmdew Posted Wednesday at 01:13 PM Share Posted Wednesday at 01:13 PM Years ago I did an auto to manual swap. I have a post on the usmb that has the solution for the ecu to recognize the trans swap. If you do a search with Lmdew and trans swap you should find it. It was a bugger and took me a while to figure out. If you swapped electrical harness on the engine, I believe it should be fine.
