‘81 B.R.A.T. - Fuel Rubber Hose - From Filler to Tank

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! After a long drive I smelled fuel and found the tube close to the exhaust pipe wet with fuel. Freaked me out as fuel is scary, the hose looks very… specific.. but also could be some type of coolant style. It looks like a radiator hose and looks to go from the bottom of the metal filler neck and travel to the tank. Anyone know if I can get a fuel rated coolant hose that will work for this or is there a better solution? See my glorious photo. And thank you

Interesting that I this past week have a similar issue if not the same. Mine is a 79 4wd wagon which is basically the same fuel filler tube and hose as yours.

I’ve been keeping my tank lower until I can get some time under it. I may just need the top clamp repositioned.

And sort of related, I bought an aftermarket locking cap and the gasket has gone dookie already. A Rock Auto product. Not a Stant. But that’s also thrown some fuel up and out from the filler tube. Just enough to show on the paint. But the hose is also wet when the tank was full or over 1/2.

So to answer your questions. That hose is not radiator size and you’d want it to be able to handle fuel. Especially these days with who knows what else they dump into it. Ethanol at least.

And it’s a tough one to find. It’s formed enough that just using a straight tube might not work so great.

Take it off and inspect it well. Get fresh clamps. Clean the heck out of the tube end and the tank inlet spout. Not much else to worry about.

Breather tube above it. That’s usually dry as far as I recall. But check that smaller tube as well.

There’s another blow back tube and of course the feeder to the pump line over on the right side but I wouldn’t be concerned with those right now.

If you take that hose off be sure to empty the tank pretty much entirely.

I can’t add pics here these days but I had my tank redone by Moyer in PA and went through all these hoses and sending unit gasket, etc.  I do currently have a front wheel drive wagon parts car - 1979 and I took a quick look and the tube looks similar. I’ll check my parts catalog later.

Thank you. I’ll get the tank to almost empty and pull the hose and see how I’m looking. Does anyone know the inner diameter of the hose?

THANK YOU for the part number. Is there anywhere that stocks it anymore? Otherwise I’m looking at getting a general fuel rated hose and making it fit.  How would YOU fix/replace it?

Have to see if there’s a split in the hose etc

That’s why I posted the info about the hose fitting all wagons and Brats. That’ll at least give you a better shot at finding a decent boneyard donor.

Otherwise I’m no so sure what I would do to repair the hose. All comes down to what the fuel will do corrosively to the repair substance.

Replace with boneyard hose is my first choice.

Given that I have two 1970s wagons I need to retain my extra.
