New to USMB and Need Help

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone... I am new the site and I think it's awesome. I have been a mechanic for just about ever (and I am 24, so I guess that is not a long time) but I have been doing this stuff for a long time.

Here is my issue.... I have a 91 Loyale and I am having head troubles... It started off by ticking a little and I decided to rip the heads off and rebuild them.. while getting into it I decided to replace the water pump and oil pump and all associated gaskets and belts on the car. I took the heads to get them cleaned and I discovered a crack in BOTH heads between the intake valves. What should I do... I can get them welded and It would cost about $250 per head (that is the cheapest I have found) and NO one on earth has heads for a EA82 that are not cracked. I even found a junk yard in Cleveland that sent me heads but to my suprise... they are for a Legacy 2.2L. I guess they cant hear...

what should I do.. get them welded or keep trying to get used heads??? The lower half of the motor only has 50,000 miles on it.

if anyone is loooking for CHEAP 2.2L heads for a 90-96 Legacy.. let me know.. they have been tested and all....

Thanks

Christopher G Cerveny

As long as they aren't big beastly bastards, the cracks between the valves are normal and shouldn't be sweated.. Design flaw, but not a detrimental one.

PS.. I have one EA82 carb head with 0.. thats right 0 cracks.. I am saving it for the smithsonian as I believe it to be the last one in existance

PSS.. shoot me a PM about the legacy heads.

Hey thank for the info.. but I think that it's where I am loosing the coolant.. I think its leaking out of the water jacket into the cylinder. OHH well..

the Legacy Heads have been tested and are SAT! they fit a 90-96 Legacy with a 2.2L.. and that's all I know.. they ahve the cam in them and all. They look dirty but with a little cleaning they will be good. I could have a picture of them if you are interested tomorrow but I am in a little bit of a hurry today.. I have no use for them so I will sell them for like 150.00 plus shipping if you want them.. . I know they cost around $30 bucks to ship if that gives you any figure... and basically i will not be making any money off of them either... that is what I spent on them..

thanks

Christopher G

Caleb is correct; the cracks are present in almost any set of heads and you shouldn't need to worry about them. There's an outfit here in Washington that remans heads and they charge $195 plus old core for a rebuilt EA82. I can dig up the number for you if you need it. Good luck and welcome to the Board.

the cracks between the valves are more than normal. its all metal between there and there are NO oil or water passages between th4e valve webbing.

if you are indeed losing coolant thru the heads, any cracks in the EXHAUST PORT should be the ones to worry about. if no cracks in the exhaust ports, you will be ok. between the valves you can even take a punch and smash down the cracks and flatten them out. that will keep them under control and keep them from getting wider.

cracks wider than a fingernail may one day allow the valve seats to drop, so if you do want to have the heads serviced, mention something to the machanic about if he can stake in the valve seats for good measure
