Jibs
So Pep boys really messed up on the drivers side hub of my 81 Brat. The Pressure washer thing doesn't seem to be able to fit into the hub, causing the castle nut to strip when tightened. I was thinking of going to the local junkyard tomorrow and getting a whole new hub set up, would this help my situation? If not what should I do? I think I can do the work myself, as I have watched my friend do it a couple of times, but what do you guys think? Thanks for the help.
edrach
The pressure washer thing is the cone washer...have I got that right? If so, that's replaceable along with the spring washer. The hub itself can be easily gotten from the wrecking yard; just be sure that you get one where the internal splines are not excessively worn. The two washers and hub can be gotten for und $20 from the wrecking yard. Hopefully, they didn't strip the threads on the axle since that would require changing the axle too; expensive since you couldn't use the old axle as a core. Just an aside....if Pep boys messed this up, why wouldn't they fix it?
Jibs
The splines on the axle are all right, the castle nut wants to tighten normally when we tried to get it on there. I'll see what I can do. It's been too long for Pep boys to fix it. It lasted JUST long enough for the warranty to expire. I went by there and they said that and that they didn't think they messed it up, but I have had 2 seperate opinions saying that Pep boys is the most responsible for the damage. Thanks for the quick reply!
edrach
The splines you want to check are on the hub you get from the junkyard. If the castle nut isn't tight enough it can smooth out the splines in the hub in no time. Sorry you can't get Pep Boys to make good on their service. Do it yourself, it's not hard. Don't take it back to Pep Boys for any other work. The splines on the axle are all right, the castle nut wants to tighten normally when we tried to get it on there. I'll see what I can do.
