friendly_jacek
I fitted my MY00 subaru legacy with AT cooler (medium sized), temp gauge, and mobil 1 ATF some time ago anticipating some light towing in summer. This is my second summer I observe the AT temp but only 10k miles on the fluid. The ambient temps are the same, yet the AT temp I observe is ~20F higher this summer: no towing: 185 vs 165 towing: 220 vs 200 AT never overheated, but 220F makes me uneasy. Temps confirmed by IR reader. The car has only 50k miles. No change in shifting, no other problems. Fluid level normal. Do I need to move to a larger cooler? ATF additives? What is going on? erhayes
Are you measuring the AT temperature at the same place with the same gage?
friendly_jacek
Are you measuring the AT temperature at the same place with the same gage? The temp sensor is located in the same spot, on the ATF outflow tubing (for measuring max fluid temp). I confirmed with IR reader that the measumerents from the B&M AT temp guage are reasonably accurate.
ststephen
Well, I have no idea why the change happened, but as far as coolers go, I use big ones and I don't tow anything. These say they don't overcool (and I have heard that overcooling is a BIT of a myth). http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MDITP&Category_Code=Coolers Hust my $0.
Strakes
You've probably already looked but, any restriction to the airflow to the cooler? Like a plastic shopping bag or something? Sometimes the bag melts into the all the crevices after sitting on the cooler for a while.
Yukonart
Not an expert on AT coolers, but as for the gauge sender. . . is it possible it's going bad? (ie, less-than-great quality)
