Glad you found a good one. AutoZone does not generally have a good reputation as a pure parts source. These places are run like grocery stores. Many of the people behind the counter are poorly trained, and cannot be relied upon for accurate information. Personally, they are my last choice, and I only go there when all the other stores are closed for the day (we have a 24 hr store in Columbus). However, they are fine for many of the routine maintenance items you mentioned. Then again, so is Walmart and Kmart... I would get to know your local NAPA or Carquest guys. I think you'll be much happier with the service and parts you recieve from them. And don't automatically assume their prices are higher than AutoZone. They are all in competition with one another. Sometimes all you have to is mention the other store and they'll quote you "wholesale" price. good luck, John
subiemech85
there is one good reason to buy from autozone, PUROLATOR filters nobody else had the air filter for my subaru in stock I spend most of my $ at oreilly auto, axles and water pumps are in stock! SubaSkeet
youre right about it being a basic store, nothing too fancy in there. but for the little problems, between autozone and walmart there is everything i need to do routine maintenances, as well as dress up my car a bit. next week's purchases will be seat covers.... thats all i can think of right now. maybe a can of paint. i really do wish i had a subaru shop close by, or at least a napa. vegas is fresh out of both. well, there could be a napa, but its probably on the other side of the valley. being as tho i got a little bit of time left in the day, im gonna redo my muffler. that i got from autozone. for 15 bucks. yay. is there any way to hang my muffler without welding it? could i put a chain in between the rubber braces to keep it from falling? Flowmastered87GL
Autozone has kinda junky rebuilt alternators, I generally have em fail after a year or so... or in the first 50 miles... depends... but I get lifetime replacements (not bad for $69.99) The first one I got from them the shaft was all sloppy and the pully vibrated, got a new one, lasted a year, went bad, got another one, lasted a year, just had that one go bad again, the replacement had a bad shaft so I had to drive across town to another autozone that had a good one... all should be good for another year I like em though, better than Checker/Schucks/Kragen in my mind. Napa is too expensive usually. so I either get stuff at autozone or from subaru directly.
thealleyboy
Yeah, AZ's rebuilt parts leave a lot to be desired. But in fairness to Autozone, a lot of the other chains are now selling these low quality components. I still like going to my local rebuilder if I need something I can count on. Better yet, used OEM from the yards. Some (not all) of AZ's new replacement parts are also low quality knockoffs. I would be hesitant to use any new component sold there without a familiar brand name. Another way to tell is country of origin. Most of the professional type parts stores carry goods made in Japan or the US. The more critical the part, the more careful you should be in using well-made components. Nug
I went to the local AZ to get struts and strut bearings, a wheel bolt, and bumpstops for my girlfriend's VW. They didn't have a single part in stock. Not even the lug bolt! But they have Redline motor oil, go figure. Also, EA82t block to header gaskets, header to turbo gaskets, and downpipe to turbo gaskets weren't only not in stock, but weren't available at all. I hate when i HAVE to go to the dealer. SubaSkeet
'tis where i bought my oil filter before, also subaru-specific parts usually came from there (timing belts, etc.). henderson, although only 10 miles away, takes from 30 mins to 2 hours to get there, depending on traffic. its crazy far. findlay's all for newbies in their wrx's, tho. no respect for the old.
