XT6 turbo...can it be done?

So driving home form work today. Debating about a new rally-x car. Was thinking early legacy turbo. But then thought to myself. I wonder if anyone has turbocharged an xt6...or if anyone has even thought of this before (which I'm sure someone has) and maybe started to figure out what all it would take.

Any thoughts?

I think some guy (I forget his name) at ProECM has done it.

Problem with turbo, in my humble opinion, is not really the mechanics and nuts and bolts of it. You can get the motor rebuilt, put forged connecting rods, forged (turbo) pistons on it, connect up the piping with the exhaust. All of that can be done given time and and decent amounts of money.

The REAL problem seems to be the control electronics. The ECU (to my knowledge and some information from xt6.net) does not have an enriched fuel map.

To top it all off, if you upgrade the engine and stick a turbo in it, you have to also probably upgrade the fuel system, beefier fuel pump, higher flow injectors, fuel regulator, etc.

All of that needs to get hooked up to electronics to control it, otherwise you will shove a connecting rod through your new expensively rebuilt engine.

To tell you the truth, I've thought about all this myself, many, many times, and I've come to the following conclusion.

Personally, I think the XT6 is one of the most forward thinking cars ever made. To me, I think the mere fact that these cars still EXIST and run today, is amazing, considering how ahead of their time they were. The more modifications one attempts, the more likely it is that the car will bite the dust.

I'm leaning more and more toward PRESERVATION of these wonderful automobiles, NOT modification for the sake of performance. Why spend $10,000 bucks to modify it, when you can buy an older Impreza and modify it to your heart's content.

When for a much smaller investment of money, you can preserve and keep an XT6 running. Think about it...these cars are pushing 16 years old.

Anyway, just my 2 bits.

The XT-6 would be a better rally cross car without a turbo, they have great low end. The rally cross courses are usually short and tight, low end is an advantage. I have a turbo RX I rally cross and it really could use more low end. I drive a XT-6 to work and it has gobs of low end, I'm thinking they should switch jobs...

You might head over to http://www.xt6.net and look and see. I personally agree that an XT-6 turbo would A. not be had cheaply as the cars are old and just keeping up with their abilities of breakyness is not cheap. and B. probably shouldn't be tried as it will not last. and it would be poor for rally x with the uber lag. I can't remember who exactly, but one of the guys has a supercharger on his, but I don't know much about it. Last I heard he needed a hood as the low line of the stock one did not yeild enough room for the super charger. Anyway if you wanted to you could get a XT-turbo as there are many more of them and more engine parts available. You can also make the turbo just as fast as the 6, but you will not be able to match the 6's low end with out tons of work.

Hi Subaru X :) ,

The mythical and mysterious 'Taterhead' of 400hp XT6 fame supposedly had a turbocharged XT6. No-one has seen it. He did have a nice site up for a while. I have it saved on my computer. Besides the 400hp figure, no more had been said about him and he went to Germany. Ah well!

The guy who supercharged his XT6 is Paul Singer. Never quite finished his project as far as I know. Dyno'd low 200's and he put thousands (approaching 20k) into his XT6 (suspension, engine, wheels, brakes). As one has said above, his hoodline is too low and he was looking to have a custom hood on his XT6 to support the supercharger (which sat too high). Here are some cool pics of his XT6 you can check out.

Dave of ProECM (ProECM.com) has a custom turbokit setup he's made for his XT6. Custom fuel enrichment made by his company, etc. There are a few pics floating around of his header/uppipe and downpipe. I have some pics at home (I'm at work). He's not making any more kits for other XT6'ers. His is only a test bed for products he's making for other Subarus. Sucks huh!

Frank D. Germano is working on a Tesla Turbine system (supercharger) for the XT6 as of present. The product is called InVAID Systems (Induced, vortex-accellerated, implosion drive). You like reading a lot? Here's a LOT of information about it.

He should be posting up something soon any day/week now. He's torn up two motors as of recent dealing with boost/fueling issues. I think he's almost done as a matter of fact. Here's a lot more information to read about this product itself.

I'm in line for one of these babies. Muhahaha! If it comes to be of course which seems to good to be true.

Oh yeah, I purchased Witte's turbokit from him in an attempt to turbo my XT6. Here are some pics of the turbokit.

http://www.xt6.net/Kevin%27s_XT6.htm

I never was successful getting it installed unfortunately. I took the whole kit to Rallispec in NJ thinking it would be installed in about a month. I also purchased an air/water intercooler kit from ProECM to add to the kit. Even made my own website about the diary of a turbocharged XT6. Found out everything you see on that link above had to be chucked out and I had to start from scratch (header, piping, intercooler, oil cooler, etc). Even my air/water intercooler from ProECM couldn't fit because of the electric power steering unit. There went $1600, my tail went between my legs, ears folded, I yelped and my dreams were shattered instantly as I ran off into the sunset. I should've took my car to Rallispec and started from there.

So there you have it. That's all for now! :brow:

We are just about finished one.

All we need to do is fabricated the Downpipe.

We used a turbo from a 300ZX.

Enrichment..yes...

But remember..i fyou wanna build a turbo XT6...you'd just swap in the EA82T lower compression pistons.

My biggest problem is the turbo 'kit' itself. Modified header to uppipe, turbo, downpipe, exhaust, intake to turbo and turbo to throttle body. Are you saying you have all this done except for the downpipe itself? Can you send me details on this so I can do it myself with a competent shop? Can you fabricate all the parts I spoke of and sell me a kit like yours when it's complete or even sell me your completed kit? Send me a PM if you like, we don't have to discuss this here.

Any pics you'd like to share with us here or at the XT6.net site?

These XT6s seem like that have a nice broad torque band and a turbo would make these cars really move. I just want to realize this 'dream' someday. That's all!

On the otherhand, I promise that I'll get my FWD XT6 in the high 13's with nitrous (possibly low 13's) sometime in the future. It's going to happen even if I have to blow that car to pieces to do it. :banghead:
