PeterD
Ok some may know i was having some issues with my car not running correct and well i rebuilt the carb and all is well, it runs awsome untill this week. I has been getting chilly at night and when i got up this week to start the car before i left for work and that is ware the problems started. When i go to start the car in the morning i pump the gas once and it starts up, revs kinda high above 2k and it is suposed to idle down when the car warms up but it dosn't so i just rest my foot on the gas and let it rev for a minut then i let my foot off and it DID idle just fine. now when i went to start it the other morning it was really chilly and wet. i went and started it, let it rev for a minut then bliped the throttle to get it to idle down to normal...then the car just dies. i start it the same way, rev it a bit then let my foot off the gas and it dies., so i grabed my work stuff started it and made sure i didn't make it idle for a few miles then once it warms up it runs great. but if i let it sit all day at work an try to start it it does the same thing just not as bad. could this be a problem with the electronic choke....if anyone has some advice or can help me that would be great. exister99
I found this thread while searching for a solution to the exact same problem. Let me know what you find out and I'll do the same. I suspect it is the choke control. There is a spring in there that expands as it warms up. Like you, I just rebuilt the carb, so I think we need to figure out how to adjust this electric choke control. Good luck.
thealleyboy
Pete & Ex: Sure sounds like a classic electric choke problem to me. The bi-metallic spring may be binding because of dirt accumulation, and will need to be cleaned. It is also possible that the spring needs adjusted or is actually broken. In either case, you will have to open up the housing to inspect the mechanism. Some of the chokes found on the Hitatchis have riveted housings which require drilling. These can be replaced with screws that thread into the lower housing, and will allow you to adjust the choke. A used electric choke, or manual choke kit is another alternative. good luck, John
RallyKeith
I dunno. Just sounds like a typical 20 year old carborated engine. Needs to warm up a few minutes before it will run with no choke. Also yes, the engine will stay choked and idle high until you depress the throttle some and let it reset. exister99
Also another thing I forgot to mention: when I turn the AC on the idle speed actually drops a couple hundred RPMs. The correct behavior is for it to go up as a reaction to the increased load. As far as I can tell the AC is supposed to activate something called the Fast Idle Control Device (FICD) Air Valve. Has anybody messed with this thing before? Where on the carb is it, and what does it look like? Thanks...
TomRhere
Mounted on the manifold, to the left of the carb, as you're standing infront of the car. Diaphram type object, has an L-shaped rod pointing foward, and should meet-up with the linkage on the carb around the area of go-pedal cable attachment. Operated by a vacuum solenoid, but I can't say where that's located, as the one on mine was removed. (solenoid and all hoses/vacuum lines, just the unit itself was there).
