It's Alive!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

First off, i absolutly have to say thank you to snotrocket, eric, i couldnt have done it without you. and thanks for all that offered advice on what to look for and how to test it.

it turned out to be a loose connection in the fuse block. now i need to get it fine tuned, i think its misfiring on #3. not a constant misfire, but its there. that and the black fusable link started smoking when i turned on the headlights, might that have something to do with the fact that i dont have low beams? it looks like both filaments are lit at the same time unless i pull the lever slightly. any ideas?

I made it from Frederick, Md, back to Richmond, VA in under two hours. At no point did I exceed 100mph.

Damn bad connections. First, there was intermittent spark. There was always power at the coil, but seemingly no signal from the disty. Then intermittent power to the fuel pump. Then a couple other things. Finally, I was thinking there couldn't be power getting to the ecu at times. I went to probe a fuse with the multimeter, touched a fuse, and heard the fuel pump come on. Turned the key and it fired.

There is definately something with the engine. When you pull plug wires, there are dramatic RPM drops until you get to #3. Then, not so much. The engine rocks at idle. Something is rattling, too. It's not lifter tap, either.

This car is also doing the magical "oil pressure gauge trying to go the wrong way" maneuver. It's got pressure, but the gauge is off the chart going in the wrong direction. There was a recent thread on this.

The alternator seems to be trying too hard, and it gets pretty warm to the touch. The rearward fusible link in the little black box was visibly smoking after a period with the headlights on. Could this possibly be a function of the alt. trying to charge a low-on-charge battery and run high and low beams at once? Maybe the problem is in the switch and it's also shorting out/drawing a lot of power? Hmm...

Well, I'm glad it's running. I think I freaked your Mom out when she first saw me. She had that "Who the hell are you?!" look on her face. I caught a part of that "he could be a psycho" conversation. I thought it was funny.

Glad to hear it's running again. Hates wiring Gremlins, I do, yes....

Was the wiring harness replaced as a whole, or was just the "fried" area(s) done? If the latter, I would look at all of the splice-joints to make sure they were done right, and well insulated at the splice.

Was the "new" wiring from the same year/model car? If not, your problem could be there. May be some slight difference in how things were terminated at connectors. IE: Wires x y z on yours, may not be x y z on the donor. Could be z y x, or some other combo.

Just throwing out ideas is all.

Good luck on finalizing the repairs.

Which part were you curious about? It was written around 2am, and I was incoherent.

well, the harnesses are both complete, the bulkhead harness is the original fro the car, 1986. the engine and front end harness are from a 1987 gl-10. there is no splicing except where i acidently cut a wire.

funny thing though, the misfire makes the car sound like my impreza with the borla headers

i think that ill try to get a battery charger from my friend, maybe i was straining the charging system trying to run on a dead battery.

i also need to get a steering whell puller and headlight dimmer switch. im thinking that might fix the lack of low beams problem i am having.

my mom was asleep when he got here the other night, she didnt meet him till morning when she was trying to do laundry. the usual from my mother, rude awakining, im used to it, kinda.

that and she thinks that everyone that i meet online is a psyco killer that wants to rob us blind. she is a bit paranoid.
