TimHansen
It runs, drives, and it cost $100! We pick it up tomorrow. Some dude flagged me down while I was driving my yellow Toyota van; he wanted one. He had a Legacy wagon and we chatted about Subarus a bit, and he said a friend of his had an '80's Subaru wagon that he was getting rid of. Went to check it out tonight, turned out to be a bright red hatch with a 4spd d/r and a big sunroof. Only 142k on it. Needs some minor stuff (axle boots, etc.) and has some developing rust problems (the driver's seat is sinking through the floor. We will need to fix that..) Funny thing is I saw another hatch w/ a busted left quarter window tonight. They're pretty uncommon up here in Milwaukee.

archemitis
thats the best way to find subarus! by word of mouth. all of the ones in the paper are overpriced, and over driven. good find!
TomRhere
Gotta love those $100.00 cars....... Bought the '86 BRAT for that same price afew years gone by now. Started it up, and drove it home. Didn't let the small stuff like no brakes and no exhaust stop me. Had a blast doing it too. Beat the crap out of it during the 28 mile drive, seemed to enjoy it more than me. Congrat's on the buy.................................................. Whatch out for that Fox Dude though, he'll be wanting to mod it for you...

TimHansen
Went and got it this afternoon. My brother has sort of claimed it for his winter car. I owed him money anyway so we're square. Anyhow, this thing is in amazing shape for $100. The tires are brand new! (still have the little nubs on a few of 'em) The previous owner bought it for $600 four years ago and only put 20k on it. The brakes will need attention and my brother says it does not like to downshift (the 4-spd will pop out of gear). What are the general things we should check? While I have driven Trashwagon 5 across the country, this hatch is in fact my first Subaru.
Frank B
Wow, that's the twin of mine! Even has the matching hole in the floor!! Try adjusting the clutch cable, and changing the gear oil in the tranny. Substitute 1 quart with Rislone, available at Wal-Mart or any chain parts store. Yellow bottle, it will clean the synchros. It may not fix the problem, but it's worth a try and cheaper than a gear box!
TimHansen
What manner of gear oil do these take? We're gonna do an oil change this weekend. What other things should we check while it's up on ramp stands?
Frank B
I believe the manual tranny, front and rear diff take 80W90 gear oil. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
