MorganM Posted September 22, 2004 Share Posted September 22, 2004 Per tech inspection on a lot of offroad parks you need 'bolt on tow hooks with 1/2" grade 5 bolts or better'. Those stock plastic, foam and stamped sheet metal bumpers have little to 'bolt' hooks onto Time for custom bumpers! Archemitis did all the fabrication work to my design. Pretty simple really; just some mid-grade steel, 1"x2" C channel, 2" OD pipe, 1/2" grade 5 bolts/nuts/lock washers, a B.A.D and a mean arc welder. Decided to get some pictures of it on my lunch break. What fun are shots of it sitting in a parking lot or my driveway however? We need some shots in action! I LOL IRL when I read that cuz its so true Welp here's some numbers: $45 in raw steel $45 in hardware $8/ea on clevis $2/ea gloss black farm implement enamle spray paint $3/ea weld'n stick $11 for 1/2" drill bit (gotta hog out the original holes for the 1/2" grade 5 bolts) *counts on fingers and tows...* That's about $127 dollars. Now time was about 10 hours total (split over 2 nights) Things that helped A LOT was Archemitis being able to weld and using his dad's bridge port and B.A.D. Some things that could have cut cost: I bought way too much hardware. I only needed 8 of those bolts/washers/nuts but I bought 13 of each. Cheaper Wal-Mart (.97 cent) spray paint. Using someone elses 1/2" drill bit. ((ps: still wondering what the B.A.D is? well the first word is Big and the last word is Drill )) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

archemitis Posted September 23, 2004 Share Posted September 23, 2004 thats the one thing we were lookin at beefing up. but its still twice as thick where the clevis bolts, as where the whole bumper bolts to the unibody. and maybe stick some more cross brases in there, between the two bars. oh and a integrated skid plate, and headlight hoops, and... but hes gotta get to iowa in two days =] Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There were going to be trailer hitch recievers originally, but if memory serves, we forgot to put them in until it was too late. The bumper turn signals were incorperated inbetween the two tubes and look pretty good. I definately like that style and yours looks great. Nice work. subiemech85 Posted September 23, 2004 Share Posted September 23, 2004 that's ANGLE I borrowed the Big Angle Drill, 1/2" single speed makita right angle drill, reversible with jacobs keyed chuck to drill the 4 holes to mount the carrier bearing, and I had only 1/2" between the ground and the drill, fun I am "slowly" in the process of making my own, mostly all free Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
