Tranny Replacement in NE

Recommended Posts

We replaced the following parts:

front axles (both boots ripped, but one completely off the outboard side)

rear axle (taped with electrical tape)

wheel bearings (right, completely shot, two whole, but badly scored, bearings were all that were left, they totally blew apart after driving 1 mile)

Brake calipers, (we think a driver's side brake caliper caused the problem, it would free up and then freeze unexpectedly)

Anyway, from all the input I've gotten, (Skip confirmed) the ring and pinion is shot. I have a new clutch kit and used tranny (69,000 mi.) to install. The shops here want $65.+ an hour, based on 7.5+ hours and I need to leave the truck in unattended lots overnight.

I know you guys change trannies like underwear... does anyone have any tricks or methods (other than Haynes, Chilton or HTKYSA) that saves your back and arms while doing it on the ground?? We'll attempt it, if it looks feasible... remember we're "old"!

Better yet... anyone in the Northeast up for a Tranny Party? They have them in the NW... anyone game? It would be a nice "Meet and Greet" and I'm a great cook! If not, anyone willing to change it here in Salem... not for free... let me know your price.

I appreciate all your patience... this should be the last major problem... I'll post the electric fan issue when I can actually drive the Brat long enough to get the engine hot... by then I'll probably be dead.

Thanks!

Mary

But you'll have died happy!:) And your heirs will have a fine Brat.:) :)

Anyway, as far as the tranny goes, make sure the Brat is level when you try to re-install it. If you have the front end jacked up and the rears on the ground the car is at one angle and the tranny is going in at another....and never the twain shall meet. Trust me I've been there. Also, consider renting a tranny jack for the re-install; that'll give you more control over the "angle of attack."

Try moosens; I'm sure he likes food and he's trying to earn money for another project he posted on the Board earlier.

Dagnabbit Mary, you had to mention food.....I'm a sucker for a free meal.

Let's talk.Maybe, just maybe I can convince my wife to let us go up there for a weekend day.Maybe she can take them to the Aquarium in Boston.Tough to promise this but I'll ask.Very busy lately but my son is a future marine biologist or enthusiast at the very least. The aquarium thing might do the trick. No promises though.

Pedro-el choke-o.... :D :-p :headbang:

When & where (in Massachussettes)? I wouldn't mind helping out... sure would be nice to see it done once before I start thinking about my tranny swap (assumin' I pick up Moosen's '89 wagon... it's those stipulations in the profile that I'm worried about). Food is good, but I'd consider the experience a fair exchange for turning a wrench

I can see the wife gettin' pretty excited about a trip out there, and I've got a friend's place I can crash at (I ought to visit her, too... she might be interested in helping out). Might be a good excuse to get out there...

That would be awesome... just give me some food preferences! LOL!

I'm in Salem, about 17 miles north of Boston, and the city is all decked out this time of year... (Halloween starts in September). There is plenty to do locally, the haunted tours and trolley are fun. There's a "T" (commuter rail) from the center of Salem directly into Boston. The Aquarium is a great place to bring kids, and the Museum of Science is another winner.

Figure out which weekend may be good and we can work it all out!

Got a date yet?

Not yet. Paul's pretty tied up I think. I would like to get it done in the next couple of weeks... maybe get some driving time before she gets buttoned up for winter.... I've only driven it 109 miles since I got it in May :( I get roughly 5-10 miles between breakdowns... not so good huh?

Blech. At that rate, I'd have replaced my entire Loyale several times over, body and all . Guess I ought to be grateful it's only major problem is rust, eh?

No rush on my end... I've got nothing planned, besides picking up that wagon. I talked to the wife, and she'd like to get out to Boston... seems as good a reason as any to get out there. I've got some prominent ancestors out there (Rev. Richard Mather was one of the judges "presiding" over those infamous witch trials, supposedly), and my parents would love to have pictures if we could track down grave sites. If that doesn't interest the wife (I know the tranny swap won't), she'll be able to find something else around Boston that will.

If you can give a week's warning, I should be able to get the time off from work... if not, I'll see what I can rearrange, assuming the wife agrees.

I might be running out to Turning Stone here in NY on Sunday, 10/3, for a Intel training meeting, along with some of my coworkers, if we can get the schedule worked out. If we can't, they've got another training out outside of Boston on the 10th... I might be able to get the whole weekend off, help you out with the tranny swap on that Saturday (if we can work it out then), then hit the meeting Sunday night.

I'll find out in the next day or so...

The 9th would be fine for us. This coming Saturday I have to sling hot dogs for the local historical society's craft fair... I was volunteered (Shanghai'ed is more like it) by a friend. Let me know how it works out for you.
