Bluroo
Hey folks got a big problem that is driving me insane. The boy had his crank shaft pully come off goin down the road last week, turnd out the bolt broke. Well he took of the timing sproket to get the rest of the bolt out and when he did that he broke some of the ears off the sproket and stipped a few of the teeth off how I dont know but he bugard it up good. Well me (mom) got him another one and got a new timing belt and the whole nine yards. Got it all put together the way Hans and Chiltons said to do it and the dang thing still wont start. It is a disstributorless ignition.2.2. we turn the ignition and the motor turns but the car wont start so we recheck the position of all the timing marks and find that the belt has jumped anywhere from 8 to 12 teeth on the sprokets. The tensioner is good and all pullys seem to be good. any ideas as to why the dang thing keeps jumping time?
Legacy777
Are you sure you've got the marks aligned properly? The crank one can be a little deceiving. I've got pics from my tbelt change if you'd like to take a look at where the marks should be http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru/images/timingbelt Also, here are the factory pages for the timing belt change procedure http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/Timing_belt1.jpg http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/Timing_belt2.jpg http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/Timing_belt3.jpg http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/Timing_belt4.jpg http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/Timing_belt5.jpg http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/Timing_belt6.jpg http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/Timing_belt7.jpg http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/Timing_belt8.jpg Once you get the belt on, tensioner installed and pin pulled, roll the engine over by hand a little bit in both directions to take the slack up. You can use the bolts on the cam pullies to roll the engine, or put the crank bolt on temporarily. If you don't do that, the slack won't be taken up. If you try to start the engine.....it'll jump. DerFahrer
Josh, I never did that and my car hasn't jumped timing since I did it a year and a half ago
Legacy777
beats me. I just know that until I rolled the engine over the belt didn't seem to be as snug.
Setright
Question, and I hate to have to ask this: Standing at the front of the car, looking into the engine room. which way does the top side of the timing belt move?
DerFahrer
It moves towards the driver's side, to your right, clockwise...
Setright
Okay, thanks. Makes sense too, since the belt tensioner is then on the slack side.
