rogerrobin
I got a flat in the side of one tire and was told that rather than replace just 1 tire or even a set of 2 tires I would need to purchase a complete set of 4 new tires because it's critical that all four tires have exactly the same tire wear. Otherwise, this would create a problem with the transfer case and transmission, possibly resulting in the need to replace both. This seems nuts to me. Is this for real? Isn't my 99 Forester designed to handle uneven road conditions? Will slightly different tire wear between the front and rear tires really result in my having to replace my transmission??? I was told this by the Big-O salesperson who allegedly checked it with Toyota. When I called Toyota they told me I could get by with just 2 new tires. My mechanic told me the same thing. However, a transmission specialist confirmed what the tire guy told me. I don't know whom to believe. Does anyone out there have any experience with this? rallyruss
thats a bit of a tricky subject. I agree that mabey replacing two at the same time is good. if the remaining two have a good amount of tread left on them then you should be fine. if they are almost shot, chang em out at the same time. or a little ghetto trick. run the new tires at a slightly lower pressure than normal while running the older tires at max pressure for the tire(printed on the tire) this will evin out the height some what. oh you may want to try the new generation area of the site. most older subes can be run in 2wd so its not an issue for them. MilesFox
ita only really gonna matter when its in 4wd. and really only when in 4wd on dry pavement, which is a no-no. you will be ok, as long as the tire is the correct sizeit seems that i have been changing tires quite often, using up my spares and getting flats, yet my tranny has been in my last 3 cars! Its a 99 forester.. its always in 4wd. Some places will actually shave a new tire down to match diameter and save on drivetrain wear But honestly, if you are over 50% wear on your existing tires, just throw down and replace all 4. Its one of the prices you pay for having AWD
