Can Accel SS coil fry dist electronics?

Recommended Posts

1982 EA81.

I replaced the stock coil w/the yellow accel superstock on. At first it ran great. No hesistation and lots of power.

Well recently I started getting some misfiring at high RPM. I figured that the vac advance wasn't working.

Someone mentioned that the Electronic Control pack on the Dist can be fried by all of the power coming from the new hot coil.

anyone have a problem with this? What are possible fixes. (besides swaping out the electronic control pack every time)

I think its more likely that the Accell itself is crapping out. I , and a number of others have dealt with that already. Mine quit this past summer.. All started with a miss at high RPMs.....

How long did it take for it to die? It started to have issues on Monday night. Then Tuesday I couldn't get over 15 MPH is 1st gear. Top Speed was like 45 or so in 4th w/the car bucking like mad. Then last night I tried to limp it home. Within 15 mins of limping it got really bad and I had to get someone to come tow me home.

So we are talking about maybe and 1 hour of engine opp time. Is that common?

put your OLD coil back in, you did save it, didn't you??

if you still have the problem, it means you have a problem

had similar issue, had to change dist, just changing the control module did no good, as it was a matter of broken and worn out parts

YEp saved oil coil.

I am going to try that first as it's a whole easier than pulling out my dist.

If you look at the other Accel thread, I e-mail the author of the quote to ask for clarification as to what is going on.

Those of you who purchased an Accel made in the USA are the luck ones.

The new Accels are made in Taiwan.. those cheapo Chinese, always messing things up!!!!!!!!!!!

My accell lasted about 10 months..

From the time it started having problems to the time it died was about 2 hours drive time...

When I pulled it out, I noticed the coil wire was all puffed up from oil leaking from the top of the coil, down the wire and into the dizzy cap.

Probably not going to have a whole lot of luck with that.. he is currently without regular internet access. I talk to him a couple times a week though and would be happy to pass on any questions you may have.. I may even be able to answer them myself...

Huh maybe thats why mine hasnt craped out yet? I bought this thing YEARS ago for my 472ci caddy engine. Never put it on cuz when I went to install it I found out I had an upgraded dizzy with the coil under the dizzy cap. Threw it in a box and forgot about it.... then 2 years ago I found it and was like "HEY! This will work in my Subaru!"

here is the reply that I got from IgnitionMan.

The Accels are now made in Taiwan, identified by the crimp at the body to top. Full crimp all the way around the top, Taiwan. If the crimp looks like it is segmented, crimp, raised then crimp, raised, it is an Andover coil, made in Indiana. Accel refuses to do anything about the issues they have, so...I now recommend these two coils, made on the Andover line the Accel used to be made on,

Black, NAPA IC12 (DO NOT USE THE IC12SB COIL)

Chrome, MSD 8200 Blaster II (DO NOT USE ANY OF THE RED BLASTERS 8202, 8203, 8223).

Anyone want a yellow coil-shaped paperweight?
