brus brother
How hard is it to swap a steering wheel/column(?) and airbag from a donor car? Both cars are 1993 Legacy L models. The bad one doesn't hold at the highest tilt adjustment position and the airbag light is on all the time. I don't have a manual and am hoping it is intuitive. coloradosubarules
It's not hard at all. You need to first disconnect power from the battery. You should find some screw or bolts on the back of the steering wheel that hold the airbag into place. Remove those and you will notice the airbag pulls out. Once out a few inches you will have to disco a wireharness conecting the wheel to the bag. Once apart, place the bag someplace safe and out of the way. If you wish to keep your original key then you are going to want to remove the plastic shrouding on the steering column and remove the ignition switch. Under the dash you will find more wire harnesses attached to the steering column. Disco those and remove the column. Install of new column is reverse of disco. Hope this helps. If you are going to keep your wheel you are going to need a steering wheel puller. Greg
ShawnW
Can get you a complete column with airbag at work if you want. Otherwise you have to take a tamperproof torx bit and unscrew the airbag unit. The screws are hidden behind panels that are behind where the cruise control lever is and the empty blank on the opposite side.

brus brother
Turns out I was up at Oobnuker's today and the steering column avec airbag was already gone. I will try and deal with the issues on the current 93 Legacy without the benefit of transplant. How do I diagnose an airbag light that is always on? How do I get the steering wheel to stay in the highest tilt position? The good news is that the oobman set me up with door panels (tan) that I installed in anotherwise blue interior (the originals had become a dog chew). The car now has all the charm of a pair of two toned shoes.
bajavwnsoobnut
reccomendation for the airbag removal disconnect the neg side of batt and let sit for 30 min + before you fiddle around with it cause of the capacitors need to discharge before you can touch anything (this info is from hondasucks that I got awhile back)
brus brother
Thanks for the caution regarding discharge of system. I still need help in diagnosing air bag light staying on as well as what to expect is preventing the steering wheel from staying in the highest tilt position. bajavwnsoobnut
you know what just thinking of that makes me wonder where does the wiring for the airbag go? could it be close to the tilting mechanism on top?
brus brother
I'm thunkin' the same way but have never been inside the column. Any explorers out there who know the way?
