I have a 2000 Subaru Forester AWD Automatic which flashed the AT Oil Temp light at me while I was on the road. Now this morning, I drained off a few quarts of AT fluid because it smelled burnt. Then I added a few quarts. The light has stayed off since yesterday ... but now:

1. Do I check the AT levels while it's running in neutral? OR

2. Do I check it with the engine off?

Any help greatly appreciated!

To check AT fluid level, warm up the trans/car to normal operating temp. Park on level surface, cylce the gear shifter slowly from park to 1 and then back to 1, leave car running, and then check fluid level

YIKES!!! What a bad time for a typo to creep in!

---> PARK <--- It should have read "... and then back to PARK,..."

ATF levels are checked like Legacy777 said, but check is done in PARK for safety reasons.
