stngllhm
i've got a dual range tranny and 3.9 diff i would like to put in my 87 gl-10 wagon is there any differance in how strong the d/r is in ralation to the 5 speed on-demand i have in there now. so in short if i do the swap is the d/r going to hold up i was told that the turbo tranny is built more heavy-duty that is why i am asking
calebz
It will bolt right in.It will hold up. I haven't seen anything that suggests to me that the turbo pushbutton tranny is stronger than the N/A PB tranny they used , or the the D/R tranny. Just be sure to put the matching rear diff in. NorthWet
It will bolt right in. Any axle/spline/size issues that need to be considered? I know there are differences MT vs AT, how about turbo vs non-turbo?
WJM
actually you will need the NA axles that come with the NA trans...front ones only tho. The rears are the same regardless. 23 spline count for the NA and all autos, and 25 for Turbo 5MT FT4WD, 4WD, and XT Turbo 2WD and 4WD and FT4WD

WJM
well that sucks the cvs with the d/r are bad and the one on my turbo are good. what about the hubs Hubs are the same...85-94...DL, GL, GL-10, RX, XT, Leone, Loyale...NOT XT6 tho. so are the CVs completely destroyed? I wouldnt think so...take them apart...clean them...repacc with subie grease....put subie CV boots on them, and clamps...and install away!
stngllhm
the splines on the hub end are thrashed pretty bad.
WJM
oh... well...see if the outer CVs from the turbo ones will fit the shafts on the NA ones...ive never tried that....but it might work....
stngllhm
isn't the inner joint easier to get apart
WJM
depends...could try that too... 2 things to get the DOJ off...a big circlip deal in a gap on hte DOJ cup...and then an internal snap ring on the end of the shaft holding the DOJ balls and cages on. The CV...secure the sahft...and gently beat the CV assy off the shaft...pops out.
MilesFox
oh... well...see if the outer CVs from the turbo ones will fit the shafts on the NA ones...ive never tried that....but it might work.... the doj from a 3at turbo axle is the same diameter as the 25 spline axle, but it has a 23 spline count. this way you can have a 23 spline axle that has the turbo durability. if you decide to but new axles altogether order for a turbo automatic 3spd, any model, as long as its not for full time autos(4spd)
PoorManzImpreza
are the full-time 4eat turbo trannies 23 or 25?

BobBrumby
are the turbo\NA doj the same size ? Cause if thats true could u just use NA doj outer cup with the turbo axles\doj midle-race and bearings. Do turbo backends e.g. lsd's have the same spline count as NA rear diffs? Do turbo backends e.g. lsd's have the same spline count as NA rear diffs? the 23 spline from 3at, the 25 spline from full time 4at and turbo 5spds are the same, as well as xt6. all you have to do is swap the proper cup end onto the axle you are using, and install a new boot clamp
