wiggles
I've got an 88 wagon with the NA ea82. I'm going to replace the heads pretty soon and i was wondering how much material in the exhaust port can safety be removed? What is a good pipe diameter for the exhaust on these engines? And anyone know of a place to get a better cam?

Well, absolutely not an expert, but since most EA82 death-cracks occur in the exhaust port area, I would be leary about removing any material from the exhaust port. (or, Oh! Knowledgeable Ones!, is this just the turbo heads that dies this way???) On a related note, I started a thread awhile ago about bandsawing a head apart to see how much was where. Kinda funny, but I think that we are still looking for dead heads as guinea pigs...
Turbone
Thats a good point about the exhaust ports, altho I think if you stayed mainly in the rim of the port you might be all right. Delta Cams is in Tacoma, should be in the phone book or someone here will have the #. NorthWet, you need dead heads? I got a few, you can grab one when you come pick up that TC
idosubaru
have you addressed the intake ports? opening them up, matching them to the gasket and intake runners? i think more gains can be had there, but i'll admit i don't know a ton about the EA82. i resealed an EA82 this summer and had the cams done (delta cams) and the heads ported and polished and the thing ran awesome. it was in an XT. i've owned one XT and 5 XT6's and i was really impressed how this thing drove. i actually told the guy to NOT spend all that money on cams and head work, but it turned out much better than i thought. then it had a coolant leak - tiny hose under the power steering pump that i fixed in a few minutes. then it had another minor leak and he sold the car for like 300 bucks on ebay before i had a chance to look at it.....someone got a nice deal, if they knew what was in it. NorthWet
...NorthWet, you need dead heads? I got a few, you can grab one when you come pick up that TC ONLY if you can assure me that they are beyond redemption. Otherwise, they will just feed my hoarding problem and I will keep them waiting for the day I can resurrect them!!!

MilesFox
you can take away at the middle of the exhaust port, you can blend the webbing in a little at the corners, and on the outer circumfrence you can take away at the curvature from the exhaust valve chamber on the intake side you can round out the bends, and blend in the protrusions from the lifter cavity. http://www.warpthree.com/milesfox/87rx/rxbuild/porthead.jpg a dremel with the smake atatchment works well http://www.warpthree.com/milesfox/87rx/rxbuild/port3.jpg http://www.warpthree.com/milesfox/87rx/rxbuild/port2.jpg webbing. cracks in this area will lose coolant into exhaust port. http://www.warpthree.com/milesfox/87rx/rxbuild/portexhaust.jpg you can grind away around the valve guides. dont worry about the cracks between the valves, on these heads they went to tthe valve guides and the head was good. you can flatten the cracks down with a punch, beware of them letting the valve seats fall out, stake them in. http://www.warpthree.com/milesfox/87rx/rxbuild/porthead.jpg
