Ultimate Subaru Message Board

Attn: all Alaska/far west Canada members

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody. There was a thread discussing this a while back, but I thought I'd start a new one since the topic has changed a bit.

Alaska has no subaru clubs that I or anybody else here has found. That is a problem. I've been putting a lot of thought into this recently, and came up with the following idea for a club:

Subaru Klub of Alaska, or SKA. (Other names could be considered, that's just what I've come up with, probably since I am addicted to that genre of music.) No formal positions or official meetings. More of a network of subaru owners in the state. I could distribute by email/USMB complete lists of members and their contact information. Efforts would be made to meet up for offroading trips, drives, work-on-soob parties, etc. This club would be all inclusive as far as interists, not limited by year or use of cars. The primary benefit would be that through membership, members would agree to provide assistance to the best of their abilities to any other members that happen to be in or travelling through their area, whether it's a tow out of a ditch, a floor to sleep on, or a ride to the parts store. In a state like Alaska, that could prove very helpful. Lifetime membership would be the price of buying a club sticker.

So, what do you think? I believe that with a decent-size membership, this could be quite helpful to everybody, because even subarus break down and need a tow, and it's always nice to have others to go offroading with or to assist with pulling an engine or something.

And we could get cool stickers:grin: .

I am posting, really just to keep this thread active, so that any other local subie fans might have the courage to speak up and get involved. I have been PM'd asking when the next meet might be. Anyone want to set something up? Might be fun to go tear up the new snow huh? My subie's down at the moment, so transportation is a bit of a problem for the time being, but my schedule is wide open for now.

Hello from Anchorage. Just found the board yesterday, and this is my first post. I was wondering what had come of Snowman's idea.

Been driving my 87 Sub GL for 4 years now (my first and only car), and a group of local owners and brains to pick would be cool.

Welcome to the board. The idea was originally kicked around but never materialized. This set of posts is the second go round and Kelly (snowman) has agreed to spearhead the operation. As he is a college student, he's quite busy, but I am confident it will be a go. If you want to do a meet and greet, let's put one together for sometime in Jan.

Hey there, welcome to the board! I'm really glad that people have taken interist in this, and I wish that I had more time to pursue it with right now. It looks like stuff will start coming together around Christmas time when I'm on break and can start working on it.

Also, I talked to Matt (northguy) today and we were thinking that maybe a meet-up in mid January would be good. I'm pretty much booked up for the rest of the semester for anything bigger than meeting for dinner, which I'm open to if I'd get a chance to meet some of the new members here. We should definitely try for a snow run or something later on though if anybody knows some fun logging roads of anything like that.

word.......... I'm hijackin this since is just us Alaskans using this thread.

I'm planning on comin down to anc. thursday night. I'll be there until probably sunday.

Northguy - I found that piece of door trim for your brat. Its grey (is that the right olor) The only problem is that someone else took over the junkyard that the car is in, and I can't get ahold of the guy to get back in there. I will keep trying. And for the heat vent handle things you wanted, that car has them from what I can tell. I will pop out all the vents and bring those down for you too.

So far west, that's Vancouver Island too? There is a lot of BC members on this board and I can't speak for them but I think meets local are a great idea. I've never been as far north as AK but I've often dreamed of road trippin and backcountry skiing there. I'm thinking of starting a thread to see if any BC guys and gals are interested in a local club and or meets.

One of the purposes of this venture is to establish a help network in the event of breakdown. We would welcome your inclusion in this mission.

Awesome, I've got subie friends around BC and AB that would be very keen on this too. A help network might be a thread all on it's own? That's got serious potential. :)

I've helped wrench on strangers cars in ferrie line ups, parking lots, and on the mountain too. Not before getting turns in though.

No friends on a powder day.

Any chance to feel useful I'll take.lol

That would be GREAT if we could get some Canadian guys involved! Basically anybody farther north than the continental US is more than welcome to join. I dunno about the whole "...of Alaska" thing then, but maybe we could form an alliance of two clubs or something.

Hey there!!

Yes, this is still in the works. I apologize for the slow going, but I'm taking 22 credits at UAA right now, so I'm planning on undertaking this operation once Christmas break starts, which is now in less than two weeks.

I recieved your email, AK-Brando. Thanks for the interest! If others could follow suit, it would make my work much easier.

No problem. Even though I don't currently have a Subaru, I used to, and plan on getting one again. Be glad to help out anybody that needs it if I can.

If any of you plan on heading to Valdez, drop me a line so we can meet. I do get up to Anchorage quite a bit, but it seems I am always pretty busy (shopping, family, etc.) when I am there. My time in Anchorage always seems too short for what I want to get done!

Later,
