88GL 5speed 4wd turbo check engine

Recommended Posts

Well thaks to Connie and Paul this past Sunday I learned how

to read the codes from my computer. It turns out

that I have a code 34 showing up. The list here

says that it is a problem with the EGR. I looked at the

procedure in chiltons for testing things and I do not

have the needed tools. So here is the

real question?

What are the chances that there is a vacum problem? The

problem started at about the 70K mile mark. My thought is

that it is most probably the EGR valve and it will be cheaper

to just replace that than buy a vacum gage, vacum pump

and what ever else I would need to check other things

first.

Thoughts folks?

Also exactly where do I find my EGR on my machine? The Chiltons

was not very helpfull on this point.

The EGR valve itself is on the back side of the intake manifold, kinda forward of the starter.

Other, more knowledgeable, members will chime in but it seems to me that there is a solenoid associated with the EGR, controls vacuum, and IT is likely what the code is referring to. A bad connection or improper resistance from the solenoid coil????

Good luck!

replace the selinoid... well you can try cleaning the contacts on the connector but 90% of the ones I've replaced at work were bad seliniod.

If you have to get one from a Junk Yard, go to a u pullit yard and get something "cheap" like a interior light cover or something and just put the selinoid in your pocket. They run like 40 or 50 bucks

Brett, check the solenoid. We pointed it out on Sunday.Take it off and check the hose connections and electrical connections as well.

I'm not sure I have any around.I bought one new from a board member for my turbo wagon. If you need a new one I can use my discount at the dealer for you.

Also,I got a call from the welder. He left a message.I'll call him back tomorrow.I saw a (718)xxx-xxxx phone number called my phone. Was that you?Call me around 6-7PM tomorrow night and I'll probably have an answer on the welding.

BTW,from the first sentence it looks like Connie married me and my last name is Sunday. :-p

Yep the 718 number was me. I got another call and had to drop

the line.

I will try to check the solonoid tomorrow and see how it goes.

Hope I can remember where you folks pointed to Sunday.

If not I might just have to drop by again!
