1985 Blower Motor

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

My '85 wagon's blower fan stopped working. Seems as though I have 2 problems. 1. There is no power at the connection plug to the blower. 2. When I route another hot lead (from under the dash - probably power window plug) the fan still does not work.

I took the fan out and hooked it up directly to the battery... It works.

I wish I could find a wiring diagram to answer some questions. Is there an inline fuse? The fuse in the box is ok.

Is there a relay switch? Does the blower motor need more 'juice' than what was found in the spare PW plug?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you give me some specifics, might get you a wiring diagram. DL, GL, GL-10? Carb, SPFI, MPFI and/or turbo? Haven't looked at my varied manuals yet to tell what's important...
It's a GL. I'm not sure what a GL-10 is. It is carbed. No A/C, no PDL, no PW. Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

I don' thave the Factory Service Manual (FSM) volume for the electricals (bummer all around!) but I do have a Chilton's (POS, in my experience). It has a circuit diagram for the blower motor, but just for 90-92 Loyale. Should be close but can't be sure.

If you are interested I can email it to you. Current format (full-page 300dpi BMP) is around 850KB. I can make it smaller if need be.

Thanks for the offer. But I went to the library last night and found the wiring diagram. However, I could not locate the relay for the fan motor. I only found one in the engine compartment... and that was for the wipers. Is the relay further up under the dash?

RD:

I have the 85 FSM at home. I'll try to find out where that relay is located.

You may want to look into switch circuit too, as a faulty switch can give you those symptoms.

good luck, John

Thanks John. I found the resistors next to the fan blower. But still no juice there. What is the sequence of wiring? I'm thinking Fuse box, then dash switch, then relay, then resistors, then blower. I'd like to test my relay... if I can find it. Then if that's not the problem, figure out how to pull the upper dash to get at my 1-2-3-4 switch. Thanks for the help... I appreciate it.

I don't remember enough how these work, but the little resistor thingy (technical term) is right next to the blower, I have a couple of those blown so a couple of my speeds don't work, but I think you'd at least get full speed with all of those blown, so that's probably not it.

I hate electrical issues :banghead:

why won't the power just go where it's supposed to

I looked at the FSM for 85 and couldn't find a location diagram for the relays. Seems like they are usually up under the dash on a clip assembly. Probably under the lower dash panel, beneath the steering column.

You dont need to tear out the whole dash to get to the switch terminal. Just pop the selector knob, and unthread the fastener holding the shaft of the switch. Then drop it behind the dash, and access it from underneath. You can check for "juice" here, and assess the condition of the switch.

good luck, John

I have a 86 with the same problem, did you figure out your problem? The relay is under the lower panel on the blower side. Its rectangular with a green and white wire (along with 3 others). I've checked all my parts and it still doesn't work. If you found a wiring diagram, could you tell me if there is a wire connecting that relay with the pushbutton climate switches on the dash? Thanks Jeff108

There have been recent threads on this, but my '87 brat had similar problems a while ago. I took it to the elec. auto shop. They found that the brushes were bad on the blower motor. All speeds work now (had no speeds before). Good luck, dp

I still think it is going to be going bad brushes in the motor. Had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. I was able to find compatable new brushes (Had to do some soldering). Clean the motor very well and has worked great ever since. I to thought it was relays and such....not!
