Which Cars came with the "good" EJ22 motor

Pre 1996 I believe - you want the two-port SOHC 2.2 EJ-22E motor. The later 2.2 SOHC is a single port, which Subaru later bored to 2.5 as the newer motors. Of course the EJ22T - ahhhhh....

yeah, pre '96. Like mine. Dual port exhaust. Non-interference. SOHC 16v 2239cc.

I don't know of any cars that came with a "bad" EJ22 motor :)

 

The EJ22 has always been pretty reliable in its 3 forms:

 

1) The Phase I, beginning with the 1990 Legacy. SOHC, dual-port, non-interference, hydraulic lifters, 9.5:1 CR, 130hp.

2) The EJ22T, beginning with the 1991 Legacy Turbo and ending with the 1994 Legacy Turbo. SOHC, dual-port, non-interference, hydraulic lifters, 8.5:1 CR, 160hp.

3) The Phase II EJ22, beginning with the 1997 Legacy and Impreza, ending with the 1999 Legacy and 2001 Impreza. SOHC, single-port, interference, solid lifters, 9.7:1 CR, 142hp.

I was wondering about this, my 96 and 91 engines are identical. But the other post said they changed in 96.

Is this true that the Phase 2 Imprezas came out in 1997 and NOT in 1999? I am getting very conflicting reports and I just don't know which is right. I need to know because I am about to drive 150 miles to pick up an automatic transmission from a 97 Impreza 2.2 outback to replace the transmission in my 1995 Impreza 2.2 wagon. I am concerned about the electronics not being compatible between the phase 1 and phase 2. So I need to know if the 1997 was infact a phase 2.

^^ Wiki seems to be implying that the 1997 had changes made, but that the Phase 2 came out in 1999. I really would like to clear this up once and for all, there is too much misinformation out there!
