Ross
Hi all, looking for some advice regarding the ea81t engine. i am looking at replacing my 81 GL wagon, as it is rusting to pieces, and i am sick of welding the thing. Found a 83 turbo wagon, only two owners and no rust whatsoever. Just wondering what these engines are like for reliability, and whether i would be best to dump my non turbo motor in it? Also, i would be swapping the auto for my 4 speed, will i need to swap the diff etc as on the ea82 models?
ccrinc
Extremely reliable. If you do the 2 things every Sube owner must (change oil religiously, and never, ever, under any circumstances let it overheat), it should run as long as the non-turbo version. subiemech85
if it smokes, it may be the seals in the wastegate, no big deal good move replacing the auto, it's crap
Turbone
If you do drop the 4spd in, make sure you replace the clutch with the best and strongest you can get. The 4spd doesnt like the torque from the turbo Hopefully the engine has the upgraded turbo, with water cooling.
subiemech85
ea81 had NO water cooling ea82 does have water cooling
Turbone
I beg to differ. The 84 T-Coupe I sold to Mr. Carb has it, and I have had 4 others that were also. When they first came out they were not water cooled, then the dealers called them back (not a recall) and refitted them with turbo's that were watercooled. CHIM
I beg to differ. The 84 T-Coupe I sold to Mr. Carb has it, and I have had 4 others that were also. Not sure of wich ones got it for why, but my 84t wagon has a water cooled turbo. Does anyone know if any after market performance injecters are availible for the EA81 turbos? MSSLGECKO
Mine is very reliable. Make sure the cooling system is up to par (mine is not currently) I don't know of any injector upgrades
Turbone
You can also upgrade the turbo by replacing it with one from a EA82T. Just make sure you use the crossover pipe and downpipe.
CHIM
is there any advanteges from running an EA82 turbo? Given that one already has a Watercoooled EA81 turbo?
Turbone
From what I understand (and a little seat of the pants), its a hair bigger.
calebz
Yup. EA81 uses a VF4(?) EA82 uses a VF7
MSSLGECKO
Do you have to use the DP and cross over pipe from the EA82T to use the turbo?
bajavwnsoobnut
Turbone I think there was a recall on the non-watercooled turbo's and they just replaced the centersection with a the one with watercooling and CHIM the difference is a lil bit bigger turbo and also you have an easier time finding a turbo if that one goes bad and also better exhaust choices sorta
Turbone
Thanks for repeating what I already said Baja
