87 Lifted Wagon resurrection progress.... still waiting for engine .... pics

well, got the new tires mounted today, and put 'em on the wagon tonight. they look really good. too bad the motor is crap!

 

I pulled the motor out and started stripping all the parts off it I put on it....

 

I pulled the heads to look a little deeper...

the bad noise had 2 sources:

 

the connecting rod/piston is loose/broken and there's a lot of knocking going on below the piston, and because it's "loose", the piston is just barely making contact with the head. the outline of the concave part of the head is on the piston, where it's pretty shiny, like it's just slightly touching when at TDC....

man I know how it is. I rebuilt the heads on the EA71 in my '79 wagon and I did a complete reseal, rebuilt the oil pump, new waterpump, and a whole bunch of other things done including painting it up real nice. Well I dropped it into my Brat which was the first time I had run it since I did all the work to it and it had a rod knock form a bad center main with the thrust bearing integrated into it. Crank move about 1/4" and goes away when I push the clutch in. Oh well, good for parts especially if I decide to get an EA81T for it and build the first EA81TT:D

I pulled the motor out of my 86 parts Brat last night. hopefully this one will last :) it came froma known driver. it was driven to me for delivery (120 miles) and just recently made a 8 hour round trip to pick up an ATV, so it's a runner....

 

if all else fails, I will rip the motor out of Grizzly and drop it in, as I've got another :brow: engine coming for it...

 

Just glad this 86 Parts Brat dropped into my lap :)

 

(plus I've got a line an a 87 Brat with only 58k supposedly....)

well, I did the rear main tonight, and put in the ea82 flywheel after putting in new timing marks... looks like the marks are about 6 deg. off. so if you have a ea82 carb flywheel on a ea81 engine, and you set your timing at 10 BTDC according to the ea82 marks, you really are just under 4 BTDC...

 

I got the old rusty exhaust bolts off one side, but not the other. studs just will not move. this enignie has the emissions steel spacers on each side, and the studs are rusted to the spacers... tried to get the spacer off, and broke one of those bolts....

 

I'm almost to the point of just ripping the head off and putting another one on....

I can't F%$%^*&%G stand it!!!!!

 

was making some progress on the 86 hydro ea81 I got to put in it....

exhaust studs broken off. was drilling them out. actually drilled through the busted bolt okay, then went with a slightly bigger bit. worked good too. then I thought I'd try a "bolt out" at that point. bad choice. thing snapped off :-\

 

cobalt drill bit just makes it look shiny.... at least the motor is still salvageable with a different head on it, but I don't have a hydro head handy....

 

On to Option #3.... another engine. but it will need to be temporary, as this engine is headed for my 82 Brat...

I know the blocks are different for the solid or hydro lifters, and the hydro lifter heads use the larger valves, but is there any difference in the heads from a large valve solid lifter head to the hydro lifter head?

 

I have about 7 spare heads at the moment...

Mick, have you checked with local machine shops to see how much it would cost to fix? I did something similar to a motorcycle years ago... took it to a machinist who "cored" out the bolt (hollow cutter), filled in hole with weld, redrilled/retapped hole. Might be pricey ($100?), but if this on an already rebuilt head, might be worth it.

 

Every time I use an EZ-out I worry about it snapping...

this is on a 86 Brat ea81 with 190k miles (but compression is about 165 all around.

 

at this point, I just put the whole engine aside, and started working on putting the intake and acceories on the long block you just dropped off....

well, I decided to give the 86 Brat motor another go. I yanked the intake off it, and pulled the head with the easy out stuck in it (and some head damage at the exhaust stud holes :) )

 

used the good head from the 83 Brat motor that was in it for all of 10 miles....

 

put the stripped down weberized intake on it, and started putting the accessories back on it....

 

more work Friday night :)
