johnnyBravo
Is this easy to do for a 1997 outback. Is it just a matter of adding the remote components?a thanks in advance.
coloradosubarules
If you have OEM power locks then it would be as easy as checking ebay or your local dealer for the plug and play module. If you have non-electric locks then you would have to install actuaters at all doors (and trunk if needed) and wire up a keyless lock module from the manufacturer of your choice. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask. I used to be an installer. Hope this helps.
johnnyBravo
Thanks for the info! I do have power locks. So is the part easy to install? Is it something I can get used or should I go new?
charm
Along the same lines, my remotes are either dead or dying. Plastic bits inside have broken and they now require (the one that works) a good smack sometimes to get the doors to lock/unlock. Yes I've replaced the batteries. Is there an inexpensive way to replace the remotes? For what the dealer wants, I might as well just have a nice alarm system installed.
Sweet82
I added Ebay, Keyless to my 01 Forester (which are listed as std. equipment). It took more time to find the clip than to install the box! 15 min. tops! I got mine used from an Ebay JY sale. Got Ebay remotes too. It was a unclip the old box undo the mounting nut, install the new box, reclip, put nut back and tighten, install for me. It has been my experience that, with Subarus, all options are pre-wired and all you have to do is locate the place and the wires and your set. Charm---EBAY $10ea Good luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer, no options! 01 Forester, Keyless + remotes, Security system, Wood dash, Gauge pack, rock sliders, spoiler, push bar--all subaru factory parts installed by me---easily

I found a guy on eBay who sells only the remote cases along with a battery. You just move over the circuit board to the new case and..... B I N G O....a new remote. No reprogramming needed. I didn't bid on Ebay for the cases but I just dealt with him directly. I'll have to get you his web site or e-mail address. ~Howard
Commuter
Double check. I have a 97 OB and I was told by the dealer that they are NOT prewired for keyless entry. It was going to cost a pretty penny to do it. I believe the prewiring started in 98. I've heard conficting info on this, but I've never heard anyone come back and tell me that my info is wrong... so... I ended up adding a Viper Remote Start / Alarm / Keyless entry for what the dealer told me keyless entry alone would be. Commuter
coloradosubarules
Have your VIN handy and give the dealer a call and see what they say, then go from there.
