torxxx
they make brass wire wheels that work just fine. the brass is softer than the steel wire wheels. I use my 18v dewalt on highspeed and havent had any problems. Hell I took off an old head gasket before and it didnt hurt the head so I say go to town with the wire wheel

Caboobaroo
where should i put rtv? on both sides of the new wp gasket?? yup but make sure you only put a thin layer on it or else it'll seep into the coolant passages and make its way around the system. Bad juju...
bec4bec
Make sure to use a genuine Subaru o-ring on the water outlet to radiator( the metal pipe pushed into pump). I used the one that came with an aftermarket pump and it leaked until I put a factory one in.

Crazyeights
When I saw this thread pop up, it made me laugh to go back through and read it. After all these years it is still pretty relavant too. I am still working on these things at times, and they still run great!
DaveT
I don't think I have ever put in an Oem o ring on the water pump, and I have not had trouble. I do make sure the pump surface is good, and the steel tube groove is clean. On some, I did use a small amount of rtv to seal the ring to the groove, as it was not in rhe best shape. More recently, I have been using a little bit of plumber's silicon grease on coolant hoses and o rings. Let's the move a bit and seal up, also, the hoses are not stuck on when I have to remove them.
Crazyeights
+1 About not needing a factory o-ring if the tube is good. I have never ordered one. I have used the factory metal gaskets though, if this is the right EA for those. Edited January 10, 2015 by Crazyeights

Caboobaroo
I found that I had to use an OEM o-ring on my XT6 as all the aftermarket versions I found were not quite as thick as the OEM one. Had two of them start leaking after 10,000 miles before I fitted the OEM o-ring.
