mcbrat
82 Brat..... well, I checked the wiring, and I have a 12V hot wire at the pump, but the fuel pump control unit is not grounding the circuit. I swapped in a good FPCU, and same thing. next will be checking the coil, and the ignition circuit.....
GLCraig
according to the wiring diagrams I have for 84, the fuel pump get its +12v from the FPCU via the Blue-red wire and the ground for the pump is the car body with the black wire.
mcbrat
yeah, looks like the 82 is a little different. the wires at the pump are the same wires, but in the 82, both the pump and fpcu are fed 12V from the IG. the ground from the pump goes into the fpcu, as well as a wire from the NEG terminal of the coil. obviously, this has been an issue before with this Brat, as the FPCU was mounted to the fron ECU bolt for easy access more tonight after a day at the state fair....... mcbrat
okay, looked over the whole 82 FSM, and the 83 FSM, and the 84 detailed wiring book, to no avail.... pulled out the Bentley manual, and there was a very detailed schematic for 82 with hitachi ... more detailed, and different than the FSM. this one showed the ground from the pump actually going to the ground, where the FSM had it returning to the FPCU... I found some connectors just like the ones on my fuel pump, and made a new "spacer" connector to fit between the normal connectors, and ground the pump to one of the mounting bolts..... turned the key to the "RUN" position and I could not hear the pump running, but then I tried to start it, and it started, and stayed running!!!! YAY!... idle was almost right. a little slow maybe, but I figure it's not too bad since this is the first time this Brat has run in maybe 14 years.... I dropped in a feshly sealed motor and weber in it..... woo hoo!!! now to finish getting it ready for my off-roading weekend coming up..... mcbrat
okay, I still need to add the safety feature back in. been looking for pressure switches, and got to wondering... would the pressure switch for the DL idot light work?
PHATBRAT
For the record, you will not always hear the fuel pump. My old gray BRAT was completely silent and it ran GREAT! My red one that I have now that looks almost identical to yours Mick (Except mine's an 86) has a loud fuel pump. Boz
GLCraig
If you use the pressure switch for the oil light, you would also need a relay. The switch is closed w/o pressure and open with pressure. So you would need a relay that's open when energized and closed when not.
Skip
Mick, when I brought up the use of the oil pres. switch and relay. I posted a wiring diagram for it with the help of Craig and Noah. In the post, OHNoah of CIS conversion fame, showed us a Bosch control unit he uses. When fed pulses from the negitive terminal of the coil (yellow wire) it closed a set of relay contacts inside the unit. The unit is about the size of a normal ice cube relay. Was only 30 skins new, but could be pulled out of almost any German car at a bone yard. This just seemed like a much more elegant solution to me. I should have saved the part number but sorry. Maybe you could email him for details.
mcbrat
I did find a place on-line that sells those switches, but wanted to try and figure out with the 2 relay system... Here's my current set-up: and here's the "safety" set-up, using one NO relay, and one NC relay:
Skip
Mick, if you are going to use the big ignition wire coming out of the pink main connector under the st. col here is a one relay setup for you
mcbrat
cool. I'm hooked into the pink connector by the coil. didn't really want to power the fuel pump with the same circuit. The Brat is gonna have 2 fuse blocks near the firewall. both fed right from the battery, but one will be IGN switched. The drawing program I used is pretty slick. (I didn't have my Visio set-up handy, so I found another one.)
