Lookin at an 86 4wd 5sp wagon

I'm talkin to this guy about this wagon. I think I talked him down to $250 on it,

but I still have to actually hear it run. He says that he drove it until the clutch went out cause he didn't have the $$ to fix it. Right now its sittin on the side of the road. Could he have messed up something else letting it burnout like that?

Since I can't drive it is there anything I should or could look out for or check?

Does it matter since it's only $250?

Flywheel should be resurfaced or replaced.Trans fluid likely to have been overheated,cheap enough to change,don't use 95w140 if not living in a tropical zone.Otherwise good deal,parts plentiful,cheapish.watch for rusty floors and apparently car thieves.

Is there any reason you can't start the engine and listen to it?

 

Like has been said, the flywheel is probably screwed up. Either machine it or get another one in good condition. Check the condition of the transmission oil, but it should be okay unless it was really abused badly.

If it's only $250, and the engine runs okay, then the rust situation is the only remaining question in my mind. The clutch is pretty easy to replace, and shouldn't have done too much other damage -- maybe flywheel like a few people have mentioned. I'd get underneath and try moving various drivetrain components to see if you've got any loose bearings, U-joints, etc. Stationary test might only find really bad ones -- but if you do find something loose, it could be a warning that maybe more than the clutch was run into the ground.

 

But seriously, unless the body rusts away, you can fix just about everything on these cars fairly easily....
