HLAs ticking vs fuel economy

Recommended Posts

Lets say a good running sooby being at 100%, what do you think these engines run at with the HLA's ticking? something like 85%

Like would there be a noticeable change in MPG?

My car has ticked since I got it, so I have no way to tell. (heh, and I have a new oil pump, I'm just too lazy to put it on. Funny coming from a guy who works at a subaru shop)

yea it will affect mileage and poerformance

my 87 ea82t

before i changed the oil pump

there was a noticeble power and economy loss when it went into tht "tick" mode

mostly cause when a lifter or hla ticks

it will not open that valve fully

so you lose the ability to get as much fuel and ai rinto the motor as it needs

and the same on the exhaust side

these and any other motor depend very much

on the intake and exhasut valves being able to open at least to stock specification

"The Cobbler's kids..."

Might actually run better at some speeds. An old tuning trick was to set the valves "loose" to change valve timing and forestall valve float.

very subjective question, all identical motors are similar. all tapping HLA's are not. each person with noisey HLA's could have entirely different issues, different levels of oil pump weakness or dirty/sticky HLA's. each will have different effects on gas mileage and performance and can vary in severity. bottom line is that HLA's can definitely affect gas mileage by a substantial amount. you can experience minimal to no effect on performance or terrible performance. if the tapping never or rarely goes away, i'd expect significant loss. if it goes away above idle, it may not be noticable.

Mine doesnt seem to affect performance or gas mileage. If it does its just a tiny bit. I usually let it run for 5-10 minutes before taking it to the road when the ticking is bad.Mine comes and goes though until the motor is comlplietey up to operating temp. But it has been getting better.

My fuel economy is through the roof..I can run all week on $5 (2 and 1/2 gallons..I laygh at high fuel costs .HA!:) )Now I dont put many miles on Bucky now ...maybe a 100 or so a week on average.
