Caboobaroo
So with all of the problems my EA82T is having, I have decided to pull it out and go through it a little like redoing the heads, adding cams, new oil pump, and new gaskets. I was wondering while I had the motor out and since I am doing some upgrades to it like the TD04 turbo swap and yes the cams, what else should I rebuild/replace/remove/clean/mess with? Here's a basic list of stuff I'm planning on doing to it while its out: full reseal kit including head gaskets TD04 turbo upgrade sicne mine is leaking oil from somewhere 260 street cams new oil pump I have a new waterpump on there right now go through the heads like valve stem seals new timing belts Ok so I might not have everything listed on there cause I know I'm missing something, which is where the rest of you guys come in. So just let me know what all I should do while I have it out. Mind you, this motor has 208k on it so I'm also thinking about buying a reconditioned block for 500 bucks off of ebay, 610 including heads but I'm not sure what gen they are..... GLCraig
Since you're tearing it down that far, it's not going to be much more work to pull the pistons from the block, inspect them for scuffing and throw on a new set of rings. Don't forget to wiggle the connecting rods to see if there's exsesive play.
Caboobaroo
the only problem I have with the pistons is I don't have a tool to pull them out with. And if I did that, I might as well get the block machined and get oversized carbed pistons for it as well...... unless someone knows where I can get it machined here and get the tool to pull the pistons, I can't really tear it down any farther:(
rallyruss
I agree. if you want to do all that you list you will need the lower end as well. I would look at yours before buying one off E bay. at least you know it ran when it was torn down. and dont forget the bearings when you do the rings. is this a daily driver? if so I would skip the cams. not knocking any one who runs em but I feel that the little high end you gain is not really worth the compromise. N/A cars seem to benifit more from cams than turbos do. going TD04 huh? well good luck and I hope I can help you learn from my mistakes. If you run into somthing let me know. mabey a little port matching and cleanup might help a bit.
Caboobaroo
well it does run just not very well sometimes. The only problem I have with tearing the shortblock down is I don't have the stinking tool to pull the wristpins! It is going to be a daily driver BUT the only places I'm going is to work (Wal-Mart about 10 minutes from my house if that) and to my girl's house (again another 10 minutes if that). So gas mileage can kiss my butt especially when its cheaper here then in Cali *neener neener neener:-p * Gas is only like 1.80 here I think.... I totally forgot about port matching but if I'm doing that, I'm going to get the Spider intake and the XT6 throttle body as well. Well sheesh if this is what its coming down to, I might as well start modding the crap out of it now....

I will make sure to bring a few gas cans to fill while Im up there.
idosubaru
i was looking at port matching for my XT6 heads and intake, didn't seem like much room for improvement. nothing as noticable as i've seen with cast iron V8's. am i missing something? i was thinking i could trim the gasket down to open them and then match the intake/head...or just cut my own gaskets. anyone done this port matching? as little as you drive i'd leave the block as it is unless you have the time and money then who cares. i have zero experience with turbos though, so maybe those blocks tend to experience more wear than NA soobs. clean your HLA's, send them off to be cleaned or clean them yourself. i disassembled mine and cleaned them, it wasn't that bad. slightly time consuming but not hard. (but you'll have 4 less to do than me). have your fuel injectors cleaned professionally by RC engineering or some place similar. get new timing tensioners, they are inexpensive for the EA82 at places like http://www.thepartsbin.com. or buy bearings and press them in yourself to your existing pulleys. i'd buy new tensioners before i'd buy a new oil pump. doubtful you need a new pump. i'm at 205,000 miles and i don't plan on needing a new pump anytime soon. ShawnW
When tearing down the engine dont use an impact wrench to pull the head or case bolts. On the turbo block people pull the threads on these all the time. You might be able to borrow a wrist pin puller from an Autoparts store. New rings are going to be worth it especially with the years of oil buildup in the old grooves. $1.80 a gallon for regular but youre supposed to run Premium in the turbo models. Caboobaroo
ok so it'll be about 2.00 for gas, sorry I keep forgetting that:) I'm used to the Brat where it'll run on anything type deal. So now I need to find someone in the area that can bore and hone my block for me so I can get .030 carbed pistons for it. That'll take my compression up to about 9:1 if I remember correctly. Yes WJM did this and he had problems but I'm planning on taking my time. I can always walk home from work:) Its only a half hour jog so it don't matter. So I was looking at www.thepartsbin.com and I came up with the following: oil pump: $81.16 piston rings: $93.48 bearings: main: $28.82 rod: $38.04 reseal kit: $173.77 I've got a set of cams coming, I'm planning on using an XT6 throttle body on a spider intake which will be port matched to the heads, possibly a TWE up pipe if it'll work for a TD04, custom WRX downpipe, XT6 flywheel and stage 1 clutch maybe, new timing belts from the dealer, the 5-lug conversion which I will have tomorrow, top mount intercooler from a WRX, STi hoodscoop, remote oil filter and oil cooler, MegaSquirt and EDIS (just talked to oddcomp about building me one;)), FT4wd d/r 5-speed conversion, and a bunch of other goodies which I hope to get in the near future! I've also decided to get another motor that is good to drop in there until I can get the motor which is in there, built to the hill and back:D Maybe I can get one for cheap since it is "Just a Subaru"
rallyruss
our regular is still much more than that. funny I can drive to the refinery in about an hour. any how. I made my own puller last time. not to dificult. but it did take some finess.

rallyruss
any pics of this puller and how you made it? no if you think my shady intercooler install is bad you dont want to see my special tool. the first one I made was out of a piece of threaded rod that worked with my small slide hammer. it was ground and bent and broke quickly. good for about one job. I made a new and hopefully better one but have not had the opertunity to try it out (and hope not to for a while). the basic idea is it has a lip on the end, you slide it thru the pin, coc it to the side so the lip catches the rear of the pin and pull, slide hammer, curse at it, till it comes out. make sure the lip is not so great as to damage the piston while pulling out. I used a pin out of the motor to make the new one but its still not proven. another thought. some types of pilot bearing tools may work as well. Caboobaroo
hmm ok I'll have to see if I can "make" one So ok, what would I have to do to my heads then? Should I totally rebuild them myself or try and get a set off of ebay that have been totally gone through with all of the machine work done to them? I think that might be the easiest way to go IMO. But its time to get Andrew's wagon running so I can get the RX in the garage so I'm out of the snow!!! Anyone else have anything they'd like to add? Like how much did a full rebuild cost you and where did you go for parts and stuff like that? How much was it for machining the block?
