Recommended Posts

on going problem, on a 86 spfi a/t fwd sedan, i changed my alt which it was bad, the battery was dead ,so i charged it up , hooked it up ,the can ran fine battery gauge was 12v, i drove it 10mi or so , i went out a few hours later to start it , no start , dead battery , the battery is 1 year old, now for my heater problem i ran a wire from the gree/white wire to the fuse box [ cig fuse] ,fan work good , would there be anything else causing the dead battery problem ? or are the 2 problems related ?

check your connections to the positive and negative posts. any corrosion or having them loose will make it do that. Another thing, if its not a sealed battery, make sure there is water in the battery. They have plastic caps that pop off and you should be able to see water down in the holes.

Take the battery to a parts store like napa and have it load tested. The battery may have gone bad after running it dead and then trying to charge a dead battery with no water in it.

hi.

look, if you changing the alternator to a new one, and your battery is old or not in good condition, the new alternator will damage very fast because whan the battery it's not good, the alternator will make the oposit charge that he sephose to do,so if you changing the alternator, you have to chack your battery that need to be in perfect condition.

dead battery would damage the alternator.

the answer to both questions, it is not a new alt , it is a sealed battery from autozone , it is about 1 year old, , the connections are good ,also the alt belt is tight , later on today i will go and buy a new battery , but before that i will have the battery tested ,thanks

You may find that you have something that is on all the time and thus draining the battery, charge it up and when you connect it up again check to see if there is a spark as you connect the battery, if there is you have something that is constantly using power and hence draining your battery.

On slow charge, charge it overnight for the next few days. A typical battery has a capacity of about 60 ampere-hours (i.e. charge at one amp for 60 hours to be fully charged). So if your slow charger is 2 amps and you drove it for about 15 minutes (charging at ??--maybe 15 amp rate), you only added about 5 ampere-hours of charge (2A times 1/4 hour plus 15A times 1/4 hour) less what it lost in starting the car. If it started for you, it certainly wasn't completely discharged. But you need to give it more lots more time at the slow rate to fully charge your battery. Have the battery tested at autozone, but if it's only 1 year old, it should be okay; if not, it should be a pretty close to free replacement. Bring your receipt from the purchase of the battery.

My boyfriend had similar issues with his XT. We went out and got a remanned alternator from Schucks cause his was still under warrenty but it was dead. So we put it in and it ran great again. The next morning we went to start it and the battery was dead. New battery from Schucks also under warrenty that day and came out the next morning and the new battery was dead! My boyfriend finally did some testing with a multimeter and found out that when the car was running the alternator was charging fine, but when it was not running it was draining the battery. Got another remanned alternator from Schucks and finally no more battery draining issues. The guy at Schucks was a major wongleflute though cause he wouldn't believe that the alternator that he had just given us was not working and was draining the battery. It's a good thing my boyfriend works for Fluke and has like fifty thousand multimeters around the house. My suggestion is to charge up the battery really good and unhook the alternator. Leave it overnight and see if you still have a dead battery. Or if you have any volt meter or multimeters you could try testing that way. Hope this helps.

my slow charge is 15amp , boost is 60amp , i have it on 15amp , i checked with autozone and they said they would replace it free if the battery is junk , so tomorrow after charging it all night i will unhook it in the morning and try to start it 4-5 hours later , thanks all
