Guest lothar34
Hi how many mpg's would a auto 98 forester get? Looking at one for my wife. Thanks Charlie My 5-spd gets between 21 and 25. I think the EPA rating was 21/city and 27/hwy. I think the auto is similar, but with a little better highway mileage.
The Dude
Hi how many mpg's would a auto 98 forester get? Looking at one for my wife. Thanks Charlie I average about 25mpg on my 99 Forester AT, here in Columbia, SC. Just be aware that the 98 Forester has the infamous 2.5 L DOHC Phase I engine. Do a search on the Phase I engine. bjwirth
25?? wow that would be a dream for us. we have a 00 forester auto and we get 20-23 for mixed city/hwy. on all hwy, we barely break over 24. (I'm afraid to see what an all city mpg would be) We are easy on the gas pedal, we don't use the A/C alot, we had our O2 sensor replaced, so I don't know what gives. I've heard plenty of people who say they get mid to upper 20's and I've heard numbers in the low 20's as well.
Guest lothar34
My average went up 1-1.5mpg per tank when I switched from 10w40 to 5w30.
rmrc51
Just bought an 05 Forester. We have aproximately 300 miles on her and we're getting 28 mpg highway. Hopefully, she'll increase a bit more after the engine breaks in. We'll see.

ferret
Not the Golden Rule, but my experiences: 2002 Forester L 5sp, usually 23mpg overall, lowest 16, best 27. 2004 Forester XS 5sp usually 29mpg overall, lowest 25.5, best 34.2 Both are the same engine, tranny, gearing. 02 was 50lbs heavier with a BAD case of piston slap. There is a difference in the emissions controls, This is the biggest reason I can see for the difference in mileage.
58GT
I get 30 in a 5spd turbo but no-one else can. That's 30 UK mpg btw.
