simpreza2
I have a misfire in cyl 4 again:banghead:. I had it about 3-4 weeks ago and i changed the plugs and wires. It went awwy for a few weeks and last night it started to misfire again. I think I have spark, I checked last time it was happening but Ill check tomarrow too. What should I check, inspect, or look for now? I also has/had an egr problem but I cleaned out all all the tubes and valve with carb cleaner and I havent gotten any egr cels yet, so i think its fixed. I dunno if that will even have any effect on whats going on but I figure I would let ya know. Thanks Jon

I have changed plugs, wires, coil pack, checked grounds, checked wiring on injectors and valve cover gaskets. The reason I mention valve covers is I had the valve cover gaskets changed and front oil seals, timing belt and the whole shabang put on and the CEL stayed off for about 4 months. It came on last week. I cleared the code and it is staying off...for now If nothing else we can have a 12 step group for ourselves. It will go like this: "Hello, my name is Greg. I have a cylinder 4 misfire". Group response, "Hi Greg". We will then drink way to much bad coffee and hug before we go home! :-) Let us know if you find something out, Greg

I forgot to mention that this is also on my 96 OBS 2.2. I was going to replace the coil pack but I need to talk to my subie friend first. If I find anything out Ill let ya know. I switched coilpacks with my 93 Legacy 2.2 before buying one. See if you can switch coils and if your CEL goes away and your friends come's on after the switch then it might narrow down your problem. Downbound
Hi..i just went through the same thing..only it was misfire on # 3.cyl...after new plugs (twice) new wires..new coil, injectors cleaned without any improvment i finally asked for a compression test..got 180 on 1,2 and 4 and 120 on 3..turned out to be a burnt exhaust valve...a quick check for the burnt exhaust valve is the dollar bill test( thanks to buddythedog)..start the car..hold a bill about an inch away from the exhaust it will flutter like a flag but as the engine heats up if the exhaust valve is bad the bill wil be sucked into the tailpipe then pushed out...exactly the result i got and when they tore down the engine to find out why the low compression bingo..burnt exhaust valve..btw since they were doing 1 and 3 i had them do 2 and 4 at the same time and also the clutch...good luck.. I think I also have a burnt exhaust valve I did the $ test and it gets sucked in everyonce in a while. It also misfires in real time(check engine light blinks) a few minuets after I start to drive it, every few days. What causes a burnt exhaust valve? and what effect does it have on my engine? Downbound
The main problem will be eventually you will need to replace the cat converter,,very very expensive...not sure why the valve would burn, have you had a compression test done yet? The thing is with mine the car still ran great even with the low compression on #3..just noticed the misfire because of poor idling and the damn blinking cel... Lesbaru
Whoa, I wonder if that's the REAL cause of Twobaru's latest disaster. Got a misfire on #3 AND had just replaced the cats. And it's stinky. Just had all the plugs and wires replaced (2nd time in two years). Will have to try the dollar bill test. Have to replace my left axle next week. (pop pop pop ting pop thunk pop pop) Exhaust valve party the week after? Awww, heck, it's just money..... (sigh) Kaja
Lesbaru
Oh, hey, the mechanic at Suburb Service in Seattle explained the rash of strange problems with some 96 and 97 2.2L as being caused by some of those engines having single (vs dual) exhaust ports which heat up too much and then mess up the sliders for the exhaust valves. A whole series of problems follow, which can all be truly solved only by replacing the cylinder heads. (He gave me an estimate of $2600.) Mine is a 96 2.2L. Sorry I havent replied in so long...i have been driving my gf's car around. Im going to do a compression test tonight or tomarrow. I also swaped the coil pack with my ej25(same coil pack) and it did nothing along with 93 gas. And I also talked with a subaru specialist and he said that a burn valve would misfire constanly not randomly. Im confused.

I hope I find some cheap easy fix or else im going to have to move up my ej20t swap date.
simpreza2
Compression test results... cyl 1 - 190,190 cyl 2 - 128,150,165 cyl 3 - 190,195 cyl 4 - 210,205 The plugs looked ok. Nothing out of the odinary. Im just wondering what was up with cyl #2? It kept increasing as I did each test.
cookie
in a cylinder the tests can be screwy. I see you did one extra but I might just try that one again later. If you can see to do clean the plug seat.
