Recommended Posts

Hey regards to all. Just wondering if there is a step by step illustrated guide to installing an intercooler? If not...oh well Im just abit hesitant about doing anything under the hood.(by myself) :-\ Like what do I need?? What do I have to be aware of? do i have to add anything else after?

Most of it depends on what intercooler you are using.

You need..

Intercooler

Intercooler hoses (silicone preferred)

Steel IC pipes.. (if appropriate to your application)

Brackets/mounting hardware(dependant again on application.. TMIC/FMIC)

Bypass valve is recommened. How its plumbed depends on a combination of what IC you use and how the IC is plumbed.

It's funny that you ask this because I'm doing this very thing right now and even posted about it. Installing an air-to-air intercooler is much simpler than installing an air-water intercooler so this is the route I chose. Right now I just need to get the piping together to complete a top mount installation. If you want, you can see me fumbling around with trying to complete this in my post. I'm not afraid to share my mistakes either. Ha!

Still though, you need a more extensive step by step process. I was lucky enough to happen to have intercoolers in my garage, a car that happened to already have a hood scoop. I understand that everyone doesn't have the resources to be cutting their hood open and installing some aftermarket hood scoop. That's an FAQ all it's own despite how simple it may seem.

After that, you have to shop around for intercoolers. There are so many intercoolers to choose from and the one you choose should determine how big of a hole you need to cut into your hood. If you choose an air-water intercooler, no cutting of the hood is necessary but you rarely see anyone with this setup so they'll be less help available.

Here's a decent write up on intercoolers (why you should use them, the affect it can have on a non-intercooled car, what you need, etc).
