'96 Legacy Outback Engine R&R

Good Morning All,

 

New to the site and a motor that sounds like rocks in a blender brings me here. A friend/charge of mine recently was given this car and as it was being driven from Lawrence, KS to Tucson, the engine developed a rod knock. I believe this to be in part due to age and a loose oil filter.

 

Anyway, I've got an inquiry in to CCR and to Jeff's Import Engines which is close to Tucson. I'll post what I find out and what it's like for a person new to Subaru, but not to being a mechanic to replace the engine. I worked light line for Nissan for a few years, so this should be interesting.....

 

Next up is the search for a reliable manual that has pictures. I read the text about the engine R&R on this site, but I don't have a reference since I've never worked on a Subaru before. I can't even tell which engine this thing has. The vin is 4S3BG6851T7.... I think it's the 2.2 4cyl, but I'm not certain and I have no idea what the engine designation is. I wouldn't know an EA82 if it jumped out of the car and bit me. Can any of you guys tell from the vin?

 

So, today is find a manual and get some prices day. Any recommendations as to whether the Haynes or Chilton is better for these cars? I used alldata when I was working flat rate and found it lacking, so that's out.

Welcome to the board. Sorry it is under these conditions. For my money, I'd look for a full service manual for your year of car. You should have either the 2.2 or the 2.5 (hope for the 2.2 - better motor, in my opinion). Haynes and Chiltons both have their shortcomings. Good luck with the fix.

This morning, I got a 72hr subscription from Subaru and will probably get the Haynes book soon.

 

Also, got a quote from CCR for around $3k (w/shipping) for an engine. I guess it's the EJ25. Fun fun....

 

I'm impressed with the prompt response from CCR, but while I realize that it takes time to rebuild the engines, I can have the local dealer stuff a new one in the car for $3500.

CCR builds great engines!

That seems to be the consensus here. I put in a part search at car-part.com and have not heard anything back. I guess they just don't want my money. It's beginning to look like CCR will be shipping me a xmas present soon.

http://www.car-parts.com is just a listing service. Lots of different junkyards list on there. Sorry to hear it's the 2.5 They are much harder to come buy due to lots of differences through out the years.

Didn't get any replies from the junkyard folks that I contacted, so I decided to call CCR and get one on the way over the holidays. It arrived today with gaskets. A little over $3k, but with a warranty, I figure it's worth it.

 

What's the scoop with the EGR line on the back side of the driver's side head? It seems to be too small for a 17mm wrench and too large for a 16mm. Did Subaru used standard size fittings on this one piece? Any ideas?

I used a 17mm flare nut wrench - couldn't get the sucker out and ended up rounding the nut. If you are planning reusing the heads and resurfacing them, the machine shop will remove it for you - they did it for me!

Thanks Bearbalu, my 17 wanted to round it off...strange.

I'm pulling the entire motor and will fight with it tomorrow when I switch the intake and associated parts. I've got some PB Blaster and some heat...either way, it's coming out. I'll try the bottom end nut also since I can leave the top one and lift it off of the motor that way if necessary.

That thing came right off with a pair of vice grips. Didn't even damage the nut. I called CCR to inquire about the crossover water tube o-rings as something didn't look right. I didn't even think to dig a screwdriver into the old o-rings that were still in the new engine. They looked like metal....durrrrr....they were put there when the engine was painted. Pretty funny...

 

That's the only issue with the CCR engine so far. It's bolted in the car and the peripheral stuff is ready to go on. 6 hours or so total for a backyard job....this has been too easy...
