Can i tow an XT6 with a tow bar?

Recommended Posts

looking to tow an XT6, anyone know if a tow bar will work on an XT6? or how i can find out before i go buy a tow bar. i've only used a tow dolly, so i don't know how they work or what they fasten too.

i'm not looking for information about the transmission, i FWD, AWD, manual....i know how to address all of that. just wondering if a tow bar will bolt up to an XT6. (or an XT?)

Ok, so you know all about what not to do, good. We had many XT's and XT6's up on lifts when I worked at the local dealership and I don't think the bumper or the frame rails had spots to attach brackets (you'd have to have them made anyway). I was able to make an adapter for my Gen 2 Brat and modify the tiedown hooks so I could run a solid rod between the two and thru the holes in my towbar originally used on a '69 Olds 442 (same as Chevy Malibu, GTO, etc). My biggest concern would be the design of the plastic bumper cover kind of has a little spoiler molded in, so to get below it would put the towbar awefully close to the ground. Maybe if you take the bumper cover off it might be ok. Gary

i know you can't tow the 85 and newer wagons on a tow bar cuz the steering won't track right i bet you will find the same problem with the xt. i believe we called the subaru dealer to find out.

Actually, that's not correct. I work in a job which requires me to tow my vehicles and I have tow bars on my '85 GL Wagon, '85 DL Sedan and '84 GL Wagon. I use Roadmaster brackets and tow bars.

If you have manual steering you have to use a rubber tie down to anchor the steering wheel so it's doesn't turn. Not necessary if you have power steering. And the bumpers on the 'Rus aren't that sturdy. The brackets on the '85 mount to the tie downs and the bumper and I have snapped both bumpers on the '85s when making turns towing it that were just too tigh and on a downward slope.

I just checked Roadmaster's site and they say they don't make a tow bar bracket for the XT6.

Rental tow bars typically attach to the bumpers, and the non-XT's with which I am familiar wouldn't handle it. The thought that I had had was to make a tow bar that mounts in place of the standard bumper, in my case meaning a slide-in mount that is held in place with two bolts on each side. But that is something tough to make on the spur of the moment.

Mini 'jack: GG, PM'ing some info re: radiators. End 'jack

My '86 wagon was a tow car for my grandpa (behind his RV) for many years before I got it.

It tracks fine. Even with the 28" TSLs on it.

It has a custom towbar that attaches to the tow points and a point farther back coming of the inner frame rail (by the enigne crossmember)

It seems like it would be hard to make a setup like this for the XT, but not undoable. I doubt it would be a bolt in affair.

Also, 2wd you won't have a problem towing on a dolly.

thanks for the heads up. tow bar isn't an option anymore based on what i'm hearing. i'll probaby be towing multiple XT6's and other cars (soobs hopefully), so a tow dolly will be best. i'm not looking to tow one XT6 multiple times, so custom work isn't really worth it. a friend left a message and said she knows someone that has one i can borrow, so hopefully that will work out.

if anyone sees any good tow dolly deals...think grossgary (Gary Gross) and send me a PM. not really seeing much of anything under 500.00.

thanks hotdogs!

$500 is about the going rate. In the meantime, you can rent them separately from U-Haul. Budget won't rent them without a truck rental.

U-Haul and most every other rental outfit around here are making it VERY difficult to rent dollies. Their insurance carriers are really putting the screws to them to not do it.

If you are talking towing one type of car (XT6), and if it is relatively easy to pull the front bumper, I still like my idea. (Of course! )

Gary, the dolly way is the best. I bought a used one 2 years ago for $450 and its just the ticket. I have 'towed' my classic AMC (can I say those two words together) at least 2500 miles over the last year and a half. When my daughter 'totaled' her '95 Impreza Outback I got the front wheels on the dolly and removed the rear section of the driveshaft (took about 1/2 hour to disconnect) and it followed me home with no trouble.
