Myxalplyx
Since the Techworks header/uppipe combo does not have a wastegate attached to it, how is boost regulated, especially when you use an upgraded turbo? Not all turbos have an internal wastegate or a wastegate attached to it. I'm confused! :-\ BTW: It's cheaper for me to ask here than call them guys. I've called them enough already. <----Cowers in fear!
idosubaru
BOV maybe? (ha you like that...after yesterday i had to try to take a stab at answering a turbo question!) that's not stupid, that's an excellent question. a stupid question is....well i'm not going to say because i asked it but so did someone else so i don't want them to think i'm poking fun, lest i get called potty mouth names. but i've asked much dumber questions. side note - mudrat asked me in PM about torque converter mods (he saw "converter" in my sig, ha ha!) on the 4EAT, i told him to talk to you about yours and your valve body. back to up-pipe question........ Vanislru
Most turbo's paired up with the TWE pipes will have a wastegate on them, only the UP is set up for the TDO4's, the DP is setup for the stock turbo's. What kind of turbo are you concerned about, from what I've read most turbo's that you'd run on our cars will have an integral wastegate. With the stock turbo, TWE pipes, nice effecient IC, a little more fuel [MAF mod], cold air intake with high flow filter, good plugs/coil combo, and a proper tuning my car pulls like crazy. I can't even hit 1/2 throttle in 1,2, or 3 unless i'm in 4wd or I break loose and that's with hella sticky ice tires on dry pavement. I won't drop any WRX's but with the stock turbo lag is next to nil and the torque down low is unreal. DSCF0004.JPGDSCF0007.JPG
idosubaru
what is this MAF Mod - is there information elsewhere on this? pardon HJ, just point me elsewhere or start another thread.
archemitis
external wastegate. bolts onto a flange, welded to the xover pipe. big bucks. but they sound so cool. saabs and volvos had them stock in the olden days.
Vanislru
what is this MAF Mod - is there information elsewhere on this? pardon HJ, just point me elsewhere or start another thread. There are a few but the one I did is nothing serious and only works on the flapper maf [86 and under] cars, you pop the little black square off the top and increase the spring tension a little bit, this only helps keep things cooler when you're not boosting and it's at the cost of fuel economy and doesn't help with the underfueling at high boost issues. Best done with an EGT gauge so you can see at what point the adjustment does something. For me the loss of a bit of fuel economy is worth knowing as I cruise around things are bit cooler. Myxalplyx
What kind of turbo are you concerned about, from what I've read most turbo's that you'd run on our cars will have an integral wastegate. The turbo I am concerned about is a GT17 turbo off of a Saab. That's what I'll be using instead of the one you mentioned. I'm using it because: a) just to be different, b)The Techworks guys were really excited about that turbo and it was one of two they had left since they raced with it. It didn't dawn on me about uppipe setups until I was looking at some parts in my garage and a recent Techworks uppipe pic I saw (earlier today). I wouldn't think they'd (Techworks) would just sell a turbo without a wastegate to bleed off exhaust gas but I thought I'd ask. Sometimes vendors assume you are supposed to know these kind of things. Vanislru
I'd call and confirm that the setup you're going to run will all jive, I too was looking at the garrett setup and was going to run it as well but they wanted more money for the custom pipes that were needed. Maybe they pitched it to you after I turned it down? I'm ataying with the stock turbo for lower RPM torque cause I'm running 29" tires otherwise I might have gone with a larger flow turbo for better top end.
