Oil & Battery recommendation..

Recommended Posts

would like to watch out for sales and stuff on oil and was wondering what people used..i have an 89 wgn with the spi....use to run castrol in denver many years ago along with the factory filter...i have done a search and found a bunch of stuff relating to dino vs synthetic, but really not that much on brands within the dino line....

and, battery recommendations would be great also as i think i might need to replace mine in the very near future...

thanx!

The Optima battery and others can be had for the best price from the Interstate warehouse in Everett. It's off of 128th about 4 miles from the Everett PAP.

As fer oil.. I prefer to run Castrol GTX 20/50. But since I'm such a cheapass, I usually just dump in the 98c quarts of SuperTech from WallyWorld. brownbag.gif

Battery, again, WallyWorld is your friend. Everstart Extreme, aka the yellow brick. It may not last forever like the Optima would, but it does come with a 5 year 100% exchange warranty. :) For me, its an excuse to use it, abuse it, do everything but lose it. If it ever craps out within 5 years of the lil sticker on the side of the battery, bring it back and they'll give you a brand new one for free. Cant beat that, not even with a big stick. :drunk:

Just my 1/2 cent.

I run Castrol GTX cuz its not expensive and it says DRIVE HARD on it which is what I do so I guess its oil made for ppl like me right

Filter I rune Puralator as that is OEM Subaru filter. Usually buy the nice "pureONE" filters instead of their base model. Unless it's out of stock.

Batteries I use tested $10 junkyard ones. :-p

I ahve alsays used quacker state 10-40 and fram filters in all the vehicles I have owned. As for a good battery, i use optimas (have three actually, one under the hood, and two in back run off an isolator to run my 1000 watt cb radio  hope the nobody from the fcc reads this board!!!) The red top optimas have like 900 or so cca and seem to last forever, especially after what i have put them through. Save your money and go with the optima and you won"t be disappointed.

Ditto on Optima. It will crank our little engines FOREVER.

I've had good luck running Castrol GTX 10w-30 in winter and 10w-40 in summer if I'm running Dino oil. I have also run Citgo oil in a few cars. Seems pretty good despite the cheap price, and it's what we run in most of the rigs at work.

Mobil 1 is considered the best oil by many manufacturers of hi-po auto engines as well as HD diesel engines. However, it's not offered in a 10w-40 weight, so if you've got marginal oil pressure, I'd stick with Castrol.

I'd stay away from Fram filters. Heard too much bad stuff over the last few years. I've run Purolator recently, but then discovered that at least in my area, it's cheaper to buy OEM filters by the case (12) than to buy the "best" Purolators at the store.
