Exhaust Stud Question

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I have a 1982 Subaru GL, 4WD wagon, std transmission, 1.8L, 1 barrel Carter. One of the exhaust studs fell out a few months ago, then today, the second one fell out. My fault, I should have replaced the header pipe/converter along with new studs a year ago. Just tryin to keep her going.

This particular wagon has the exhaust system that has the "air thing box" or "spacer" with the hoses on it between the engine head and the exhaust header flange.

There is only one of these on the passenger side. The other side the header bolts directly to the head. (gasket in between).

I have some extra exhaust studs laying around from a 1979 Brat, but they are too short( only 1 3/4 inch long) to use due to that "air emission spacer box".

Can anyone tell me the dimensions of the longer studs? What size in diameter ( mm), thread size (pitch) and length (mm)?

I have tryed all the local auto stores, nearest dealer, hardware stores, and even a local fastener warehouse.

Any hints on where to find 2 of them?

Thanks for looking and

Happy New Year to all here

Peace...RonVee

if you decide to opt to remove the spacers you can make up the length by using an ea82 y-pipe

yes the studs are 1.25 10mm metric threads, its kinda an odd size to find but napa will have them listed as "import exhaust studs" i have also seen them in the HELP section at advance auto.

you can find some if you are lucky at a hardware stoor, preferrably one of theold school ones that have bins and bins of bolts and nuts.

if the thread is not cut along the entire length of the studs install the short end, use brass nuts if you can find them also.

install the studs using lock tite on the head threads and anti-seize on the nuts thread

in my experience with soobs the auto parts store WILL have the studs you need, they just won't list the application. in other words, just take an old one with you and match it up.

if they fell out, seems like the threads likely stripped. you can try just running a tap through there to clean the threads and then using a longer than stock stud to possibly reach more threads located beyond where the stock stud used to reside. i do that all the time on stripped bolts when i don't feel like using my heli coil kits or there's no room. works most of the time, though i've never done it to exhaust studs.

Hi All,

Thanks for all your input. Got it on the 10mm-1.25 threads. Can't seem to find any around here. Will venture out to another county today. Pretty rural and no good old hardware or autoparts stores. Tryed Napa, Autozone, Advance . No go.

I took a bolt (around 4") from a 79 Brat. It is the one that mounts the transaxle to the engine. The nuts from an exhaust stud thread on to it, so I assume it's the same thread. It has around 1" of thread on it. The rest is just a blank bolt.

I ran the bolt up the stud holes in the head and they both appear to take the bolt. (they both screwed in OK). So maybe threads in the head are still OK?

Friend of mine suggested that when I find the right stud/bolt, to put a little LOC-TITE (RED) on the new studs. Is this OK?

Also what about taking the 4" bolt from above, sawing off the bolt head, and then get some new threads added to the blank 3" of the bolt (now a stud) by a machine shop?

Just huntin a cheap alternative. It's a beater and taps, heli-coils etc sounds kind of expensive to me.

Also, are the threads just in the head, or head AND air contraption spacer block?

Again, thanks for all the feedback

Peace

Ron

depending how large the bolt head is, you may have problems with clearance around the manifold. the nuts that come on many late 80's subaru's are awesome for the exhaust. the nuts are very small and don't have any clearance issues. try using a bolt or any other nut and they become annoying.

put a request in the market place and someone probably has some to sell you for cheap. i find it hard to believe no parts store down there has 10mm 1.25 pitch exhaust studs. find someone who knows what they are doing, i think you're talking to too many people that are incompetent. im from a small town as well....we dont' even have an autozone or advanced auto parts to go to but the local shop has tons of 10mm x 1.25 pitch studs.

if you're looking to do this cheap, forget all the talk about machine shops...just go to home depot or lowes and buy a bunch of the same length bolts that are 10mm and 1.25 pitch. saw the heads off if they are too big for clearance. if you buy a tap (very inexpensive) you can thread the bolts yourself. driving to a machine shop and handing them one bolt to thread sounds like way too much effort for such a simple task. any junk yards close by, these bolts should be a dime a dozen.
