Ultimate Subaru Message Board

Recommended Posts

I knocked my muffler off my Forester a few months back off-roading. It runs fine without it and sounds like a import tuner now. I asked a guy who works on Subaru's if this would cause any problems. He said no, so I decided to leave it off. Now a co-worker told me that the back pressure from not having a muffler will cause a valve to blow. He said he heard it from a muffler shop when he inquired about doing it to his Honda. Do I risk blowing a valve on my Forester?

Nothing p!sses me off more than people with noisey cars,(unless it's fat guys on noisey Harleys).

What's the deal here anyway ? Why should everyone be forced to hear your car ? If your car is ugly I can choose not to look at it but if it's got no muffler,(or some noisey pipe which the manufacturer says gives you an extra 25HP), I have no choice but to hear it.....even at 02:00 in the morning.

Do these kids think we're impressed by the sound ? They wanna be impressed ? I'll take the freakin muffler of my lawn tractor and mow my lawn at 3 a.m. !!

You can ride around on a Harley with half-pipes and make all kinds of noise but my dog barks for 20 minutes and someone calls the cops.

The good news is that most people grow out of it and since the population growth rate around here is almost at 0%, things should eventually get quieter.

Chill out man; maybe not everyone likes everything you do....

I say leave it off as I'm sure it sounds better :drunk: A thrush or thunderbolt glasspack might sound better also.

I'd like to get a nice muffler on my Outback...something a little louder...but not annoying. When I had an open air intake on it, there was a nice sound. And over 4500 RPMs it sounds nice.

I really like the sound without the muffler. And it's not quite as loud as some of those import tuner cars.

Yeah I would imagine it's not very loud really. You still have catalytic converters which dampen A LOT of sound.

Even with a single cat and no muffler on my old first gen Legacy it wasnt obnoxiously loud. It was no louder than my friends stock '99 Mustang GT.... in fact he said "I wish my Mustang sounded that good..."

  • 1 year later...

if it's to loud your to old! I don't know about the back pressure deal on an engine like a subaru, I do know that two strokes will seize or have a complete lack of power with no back pressure because it leans out, I also know that high performance four strokes like yzf dirtbikes lose power just because the muffler packing burns out, My advice to you is leave it stock unless it is a battle wagon

As Robert D. Raiford of the "John Boy and Billy Big Show" out of the Carolinas would say:

"A mans intelligence is inversely proportional to the amount of noise his machine makes. Loud pipes SUCK!"

wow, for someone on a sight where they lift brats and add hood scoops to wagons, this certainly sounds didactic, oh well, guess this sight isn't geared towards the average 17 year old kid who can't resist a dig at the people who are always complaining about the kids with the loud civics and stuff. Sorry, I thought maby you guys would be a little less square and a little more fun to talk to. No offense, but so far this has been one of the less educational message boards I have beeen on, WAAAAAAAAYYYYY less interesting than snowest

To me having a loud car is a sign that you are either not a good enough mechanic to maintain your own car, or that you are too poor to maintain it properly (I know alot of people in the second category, and I can't really fault them). When in civilization, I don't pee on public sidewalks, and I don't let my cars get too loud. Simple courtesy. If I'm out in the country I pee where I want, and I don't worry about it so much if the muffler falls off.

running without a muffler will not hurt a subaru engine.

you've posted 12 times, that's not a large statistical sampling. you take the replies of 2 people to be the sentiments of 5,000 members or whatever it is, that's not accurate deduction.

anything loud can be annoying sometimes, everyone is entitled to an oppinion on that. trying to convince those that like being loud to be quiet is silly. for those that attempt to offend or find it funny to be loud just because it offends, awakens or otherwise upsets people well that's no different than the people that don't like it and you laugh at. it's a big circle you see. a pissing contest of sorts. can't we all just get along?

not sure what you're looking for. this is a subaru board. there is information on here regarding rebuilding just about any subaru motor and transmission made and members that have actually done the work with their own hands. if you have a question about something specific that hasn't been answered, then start a new thread. most auto forums i've been on talk about what their mechanics or shops have done and technical info is limited, that is not the case here.

I still go to a small podunk school called tri-valley in interior alaska, why? And I guess I am just sick of people who automaticaly assume that because someone wants to take off their muffler they are going to be driving around a bunch of peoples houses at four in the morning and stuff. I personally just replaced my subys muffler with the stock one because I like it being quiet on the highway. I also have a jeep with NO muffler and it is REALLY loud, but I drive that out trails where no one else is. It's just kinda like when your mom nags you to wear another coat to school because she is cold. And as far as the the message board goes, by saying "educational" I was reffering more to the theme of the messages, not nessecarily the actual topics, it si a great fourum, I have already gotten some good info out of it that you can not find anywhere else. I was just reffering to the lack of jokes and....alright, vulgarities that make some other fourums so much more "educational" :)
