Pulling pistons

Recommended Posts

ok I suppose its possible but is definatly not the intended way to tear down a motor. it would alow the rods to dragup and down the cyl bore(not good) and why would you really be pulling pistons without doing the rest of the lower end?

so I stand corrected... kind of..

I would still pull the case apart and do it right.

Thanks, I was going to split the case as well, but thought I read somewhere that the pistons had to come out the top. Toybuilder's trick is kinda what I was originally looking for though. Thanks for putting me straight.

The pistons DO come out the top. The debate is how to get them out. Either by splitting the case to knock them out, or to just do the pin trick and push them out without going to the trouble of splitting the case open.

I suppose I was a bit vauge there. sorry.

due to the baffles and othor supporst in the center section of case you cannot just split case and drop the crank, rods, andpistons out the middle.

old vws did come appart more like that.

I was only trying to state that just pushing the pistons out the top with the lower end assembled is not the proper way to do it. It may work for some and thats fine. I just dont think its a good method to recomend as a general practice.

I just answered the question that was asked. I did not offer my opinion about the matter.

i found the easyst way to get pistons out without spliting the cases is to take the pin out then hook a compressor on to the oil filler pipe after blocking off both head breather lines, i used a spraygun type pressure regulator and just slowly turned up the pressure the piston started to move @7psi or so and popped out neat as

So how do you pull the pin after the circlip is removed? Don't tell me a magnet, or pliers, cause it ain't gonna happen that way.

I used a large nail, gripped it with vise grips, and pulled the pin.

If the engine has to be re-ringed, you might as well split the case to clean all the gunk out. Plus, then you can replace the o ring for the coolant passage and not worry about that leaking.
