valve train swap?

Recommended Posts

but didnt the hydro heads have bigger valves than the solid lifter heads?

they do have bigger valves but its a case of go with what you got, as im planning on getting the small valve heads planned .040 i dont want to plane my hydro heads as they are in mint condition.the other reason i don't wanna mess with my hydro heads is that if the guys that do the manditary 6 monthly warrent of fitness here spot something dodgy with the planned heads i.e the fact that someone has planned them i'll have to put my current big valve heads back in if they play the letter of the law thing

Woh woh, I'm lost. He asked if he can take the Hyrdo lifters and put them on a non hydro head? (In place of adjustable rocker arms?) ..I was thinking about that...so is it possible?:brow:

I always thought the rocker arm assembly was exactly the same, they only had these locking tabs on the ones that had hyrdualic, so people wouldent fart with them. And the lifters themselves were down in the block riding on the cam.

someone correct me on this?

the lifters are riding on the cam in the block. the pushrods are different.

all ea81T's and ea81's mated to automatics in 84, plus any 85+ ea81 all had hydraulic lifters. possibly even the 83's mated to an AT...

all the hydro blocks had the larger port heads, however, the larger port heads starting showing up before the hydro lifters.

last night I had to replace a damaged head on a 86 Brat hydro motor. I replaced it with a head from a 83 solid lifter engine, but retained the original hydro rockers and pushrods. the 83 head had the larger valves.

There were only some slight cosmetic differences in the head castings.

the differences are in the short block. not sure of the details though.... (something like you can put solid lifters into a hydro block, but not the other way around....)

i bought a nearly complete ,disassembled solid lifter motor so im not going to mess with my hydraulic motor.

now all i got to do is find solid lifter valve trains and pushrods as it is missing these.....i just had a thought, will the valve train (shaft and rocker arm assembly) from a ea71 swap onto a ea81?

i can get any number of ea71 heads that want (local subaru wrecker has 4 complete ea71 engines on the shelf) but ea81's are a bit harder to find

apart from valve size are there any differences in the heads?
