EA82 overbore/cams

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this has been covered to death. I was told that the EA82's can't be bored out. Is this true? So are the only pistons available stanard size? Also, are there any cams available or do people just re-use the old ones?

I've done dozens of sleeve jobs. When the heads are pulled and the cylinder sleeve is exposed, you cannot usually tell how thick a sleeve is. The sleeves are usually about 1/8" to 3/16". What you see is the top ridge. Some engines look like they have thick sleeves but when you bore the cylinder for removal, you are left with the ring at the head surface. This ridge at the top of the cylinder provides a better surface for the head gasket and also makes installation easy as it hits the groove and stops, less chance of damage while installing the sleeve as well. The ea-82 series does not have this ridge and it makes the liner look thin when it is actually a very normal thickness. Just thought I would clear that up.
