ER27 rebuild

I post a lot over at XT6.net, but since you guys have more people I'll try this post over here. I'm almost done with the rebuild of my ER27. However, I need a few items and questions answered.

Lifters:

Removing the lifters I popped the press fit cap on three of them. These three were a bit sticky coming out. Will it be bad just ot throw them back in without the press fit cap? I mean are they going to come apart after they are assembled in the engine? What is the purpose of the cap? If not where can I get three new lifters? Should I replace them all. The engine ran very quiet. In the past all I've done is clean them out, fill with oil and re-install. I never had one come out this hard.

Oil Pump:

I need an oil pump shaft seal, my corteco seal kit didn't have the shaft seal, what size is this? Where can I get one (not the dealer)

Cylinder heads:

Is there a head shop in the PNW (Seattle) that can reseat my valves and check for a cracked head? I got the heads disassembled.

Nice to see you on this side of the pond. Hate to say it but you won't get much love here on these boards as far as the XT6 is concerned. Seems they are sort of a black sheep in the whole old-school scooby scheme of things. I just know I've never gotten many responses on anything XT6 related. Good luck finding some info. ;)

You should be able to put the caps back on the lifters. Just put some little indentations in there once they are on so they'll stay there.

 

For the oil pump, I would recommend from experience just getting a new one. This type of pump does wear out. Check out 1stsubaruparts.com. They have good service and great prices.

 

I just ordered a set of heads from Aluminum Head Rebuilders in Portland. You might give them a ring.

 

So, just to satisfy my curiosity, on the ER27, how do you remove the piston pins on cylinders 2 and 4?

 

 

Edit: As to the lack of responses concerning XT6's on this board, I think it's mainly the fact that they are a relatively rare car. Less people have driven/worked on/owned an ER27 car than an EA81 or EA82 car. It's not that people are disdainful toward them, it's just that people don't have much experience with them.

get the oil pump shaft seal from http://www.thepartsbin.com or another online source. i like thepartsbin, they've never sent an incorrect XT6 part and their online catalog is not confusing. i would not replace the pump, but if you don't mind spending the money on a new you definitely won't hurt anything. my XT6 has 207,000 miles on the original pump (and i've had other XT6's at 198,000 and 196,000 on the original pumps) and they all had excellent oil pressure. i've never had issues with noisy lifters.

 

someone has to have some spare lifters or even bad lifters sitting around they'd send you and you can use the caps off of them. i thought about the same thing, installing them without the caps as they seemed entirely cosmetic. i may even have some lifter parts at my parents house if i remember to check next time i'm there.

 

there is an excellent aluminum head speciatly shop here in my town that has experience with EA82's and was very familiar with how to approach these heads. they do all of my head work. of course that's thousands of miles from you so what does it matter?

The pins for # 3 & # 4 pistons come out the same way as #1 & #2.

I'm wondering what is special about tool #499097300 The one they describ to pull the pins. How does it work? I;m sure this is the same tool the EA82 engines use. Where can I get one, how do you make one. I want to split the engine Thursday.

Autosport in Seattle is machining my heads and reseating the valves (after they pressure test it)

 

Let me know on the pin tool. I'd like to know the best way to get the pins out!

Oil pump, got the seal, the pump itself checked out fine per the service manual.

Lifters, 6 rebuilt ones on order.

i think that tool is really long in order to reach further into the engine. from the front and back, pistons 1, 5, 2, and 6 are accessible with short nosed tools. 3 and 4 i think need to be long and skinny to pass through the access holes to the center cylinders. i know someone in canada borrowed one from the dealer for a weekend. i'd guess most dealers probably don't even have it and wouldn't loan out tools like that.

I dunno if this would work for the ER27, but it's worth a shot. So far, I have avoided spending the money for an actual piston pin puller by making a substitute out of a bolt. I ground almost all of the head off so that it has a little nub sticking out on one side that can grab the pin and pull it out. You might be able to make a really long one that would reach way down in there. It works great on EA82's, but reaching that far might be problematic.

Well I got the engine apart last night. I had no trouble pulling the pins. I got a 10" long 3/8" carraige bolt. I have a mill so I took of the square and made a sharp 90 degree prawl to grab the end of the pin. I had to later add a recess to get by the clip behind the pin. I used fender washers and a bolt to give me something to grab on. I added a flat spot on the end so I could tell where the prawl so when the tool was in the pin.

On pins for #3 & #4 I had no trouble. I used a hammer claw to pry the pins out, these were the stiffest pins to pull.

Problem is now that I have it stripped I found pistons #2 & #3 need to be replaced, they have small spots where the edge got seized or pasted onto the cylinder wall. The engine ran fine though, just aleaky head gasket.
