Gnuman
Yes negative 25 Fahrenheit! I was watching the morning news show from new york and they we're going on and on about how cold it was and it was like +8F. I guess like most things cold is relative. It's not as bad as you think esp. if there's no wind and the sun is out. The hardest thing is riding my bike to class causes me to breathe hard and that can hurt. You cough up some nice things from the depths of your lungs though. Bundle up. I was in the Army in Wisconsin in '84, and we got Jan 20th off for the Inauguration. Heard a report that said that the parade had been canceled due to "bitter cold winter weather" because of a wind chill of -17. I called my dad right up (he was working in the Pentagon at the time), and asked him how he was enjoying his heat wave. . . Local weather was -28F before the wind chill (which brought it down to -54F). . . This is a place where a brand new T bird cracked thew block from frozen coolant/antifreeze while driving on the freeway, after it had been running at normal operating temp at the dealership. Reports said that the owner saw the temp guage dropping steadily intill it buried itself in the cold side, then the engine stopped. . . Cracked block. Anyone want to guess why I say that California does not get cold? Oh, and my '92 Legacy starts just fine, but it does not get cold enough here to really test it. . . powderhound
Intresting story. The coldest air temp I have ever experienced was in Big Sky, MT during the first week of Jan 1997. It snowed four feet in four days and on the fith day the front came through and it was -50F. Not a single car in the parking lot started. All the Subarus had cracks and missing chunks on the belts. We took the battery inside and we're eventually able to get it jump started late in the afternoon. I remember driving to Bozeman and my dad changing the belts outside in the NAPA parking lot. That was cold. Northern Minnesota hit -54F during this last blast.
Setright
I hate to move us further off topic, but I can't help myself: Windchill only affects humans and animals, right? We have a capacity to shed heat to the cold air as it blows by. A metal engine block will only be cooled down to the ambient temperature.
cookie
I used to go back to Maine for Xmas with my Greyhound busses. Greenville is in the western mountains on a big lake. It would be only about 20 below but with the wind off the lake it was truly miserable. I know for folks from Alaska and some of Canada and the Great Lakes this is child's play but it was plenty cold enough for me.
