singletrack
I wanna remove the power steering on my wagon. I guess I can just remove the pump and hoses and leave it at that. I don't wanna do a hack job on it either, though. Should I just run the ps rack I've got dry or is it worth it to get a non ps rack at the jy? Is there a mechanical advantage to a non p/s rack? MudisFun
My power steering leaks bad! I tryed flushing with stop leak seeing how it was coming out from the pass inner boot, worked for three days. So right now I am with out power steering and minimal fluid in the system; although the car seems to be driving fine. Taking out the pump, hoses, and fitting new belts should be okay as far as I know. But you might want to every now and then run some fluid system for lube and cleaning. Wasteland
To do it right you'll have to drain the PS system, dump the pump and rack and install a manual steering rack, it's not that bad of a swap. Why are you wanting to get rid of your PS? If you can wait until sping I know of a few EA82 wgn's that will be coming up for auction, I haven't been able to get under their hoods but at least one should have a manual rack. singletrack
Why are you wanting to get rid of your PS? Just for simplicty. I don't think I'll miss it much. Think i'd be less likely to break stuff on-trail without it as well. You and Dave don't seem to have any problems without it, granted my car is a bit heavier. It also pisses fluid, which could be fixed, but for how long... I've never had any kinda car that didn't leak steering fluid constanly from everywhere. So fuggit. I've got enough leaks on the stuff I *need*.

rallyruss
my 85 did not have PS on it. made it a little tricky under hard rocky wheeling at really low speed. if yours still works good I would leave it alone. If you really want to get rid of it I would suggest swaping out the rack to a non PS unit rather than run yours dry. also the pump bracket can only be removed with the intake off. not a big deal but it just seems like a lot of work to fix whats not broken. if you wheel carefull you should not break anything. not like its an H2:rolleyes: . erik litchy
are all the steering racks the same? What if I want one with a more sporty ratio? it seems like mine is 4 turns lock to lock
singletrack
i was planning on going to red rocks on the 22nd i could bring it to the meet if you. I dunno if the meet is gonna happen for me - I managed to get a $70 speeding ticket in the wagon the other night. I used both excuses - "the big tires throw off my speedo" and "I dont think this car goes that fast" but Officer Dude still gave me a ticket... Anyway, that eats up most of my travel budget. I'll let ya know ifin I need that rack though, thanks! if you wheel carefull you should not break anything. not like its an H2:rolleyes: .That's fer sure! MorganM
I pulled off the pump and the lines down to the main crossmember. That's it.

Vanislru
Morgan, how's it wheel without the PS? I'd think it'd be a rougher go of it, my PS is a leaky POS but I'm concerned about the big tires jerkin around the steering wheel and takin my thumbs off or somethin. rallyruss
are all the steering racks the same? What if I want one with a more sporty ratio? it seems like mine is 4 turns lock to lock xt steering racks will bolt up with little modification if I rember correctly and the have a slightly tighter steering ratio. I helped a felow board member do this swap a while back.
gravelRX
I don't know about other years, but in 87 the PS rack has a faster ratio than the manual rack. I don't have my FSM here at work but Ican get you specifics if you like. My bro-in-law wants to disconnect his for the sake of a Weber install and he hasn't decided on the easy "removal method" or the harder "change the rack method". rallyruss
any XT or just certain engines? I did not pull it from the doner car. but I think he said it came off a non turbo 4cyl XT. I know some/all? XTs have the electric PS pump that may be an issue. mabey some one knows XTs better than me and can chime in.
MorganM
It's fine on and off the road. Especially if you are moving at all, then I don't even notice a lack of power assist. Not really enough weight on the tires to make it hard to turn. Its not becuase I got huge Popeye arms either... cuz I dont have big arms. I rely on my cheater bar a lot =P
