AirheadDave
I was fixing a leaky oil pump when I noticed that the alignment marks for my camshaft sprockets were about 45 deg. off from where I thought they should be. Since I can be immensly stupid when not fed properly, I put them where I thought they should be. I was wrong! and turned the engine over twice with the cams baout 45 deg, off. Did I bend the valves? Am I sunk?
GLCraig
We would need to know what engine you have to answer your question.
AirheadDave
I am sorry! Panic set in. I have a 1995 Impreza with a 2.2 FI and an auto trans. We would need to know what engine you have to answer your question.
DerFahrer
Nope, your valves are fine. 2.2's weren't interference till 1997. Use the marks on the timing belt when setting timing on these engines. It takes out all the guesswork and headaches.
Mike V
I did not think ANY of the 2.2 liter, SOHC engines were "interference engines". Can anyone confirm this?
Nug
Some of the later ones are, they bumped up the compression slightly, which removed the margin of error.
AirheadDave
Thanks everybody. BTW, I got into trouble by doing exactly that-lining up the marks on the camshaft sprockets to notch at the top of the cover and by aligning the small triangle-shaped mark on the crankshaft gear with the top of the crankcase seam. I did not see any other marks, although the manual download I saw shows a mark on the ring behind the crankshaft gear that the crankshaft sensor reads. I hope my suby has one.
